How Do You Grow Your Blog?

If you’re like me and you’ve been blogging for a while one of the challenges you’ve undoubtedly faced, unless you’re a celebrity or high profile figure, is growing the audience for your blog.

Getting your voice heard in the myriad of blogs vying for readers is a rollercoaster ride between glee and glum.

You jump with excitement each time you’re notified of a comment or new follower. You are ready to climb the walls after you drop your well-crafted message into the pot only to be greeted with silence, as if you’d suddenly been transported to a faraway place to watch cows chew cud.

FOUR TIPS FOR INCREASING YOUR EXPOSURE

Persistence: Stick with it. Although you may not be as far along the road as you wish, you will not get anywhere if you stop moving.

Consistency: Blog regularly. Set a manageable publishing goal that you can meet. Once a week on the same day at the same time is better than posting willy-nilly. If you are hit and miss, your readers will be too. You may not always be able to control when your creative engine ignites, but you are in total control of when you post.

Research: Know your stats. Know your audience. Learn what gets read when. Routine reveals patterns, helping you time right and maximize your reach. How many people do you expect to read your post if you drop it at 2 a.m. on Sunday? Learn what subjects interest your audience and what tags attract the blogosphere’s sea of drive by surfers.

Usefulness: The competition for attention is fierce. You’re a relatively unknown entity. Why do people care what you have to say? Warren Buffett could post an entire series on watching paint dry and people are going to click on his blog to find out everything he has to say on the subject. The same is not true for me and you. People need to be able to trust that you will provide them with something that will make a difference in their lives, otherwise not even your mother will bother to stop and read what you wrote.

Hopefully, you will find these four tips beneficial to your blogging experience. Take what you like, leave the rest. PersistenceConsistencyResearch, and Usefulness will help you draw people to your spot in the blogosphere.

There are a number of other things that can help you as well. If any come to mind, please feel free to share your insights in the comment section.

Peace, Love and Happy Blogging!

  1. Weekly features and participation in linkups have had a positive impact the reach of my blog.

    Encouragement of others brings blessings.

  2. I haven’t done much with linkups, but I did run with regular features —My Monday Morning Cup, Wednesday Worship, Scripture Saturday, etc…for a number of years. This past year, I’ve gotten away from that in part because my routines changed considerably over the last two years with starting a new job that can be pretty involved and intense. Thank you for sharing your thoughts. Your comments are encouraging and a blessing.
