Daily Devotional | Why Easter Matters to Me

For me, Easter is a bigger deal than Christmas. At Christmas, we celebrate the birth of Jesus. Surely, this is a miraculous event worthy of celebration. Our culture certainly makes a bigger deal out of Christmas than Easter, albeit not for the reasons we should. On Christmas, as Christians, we celebrate God becoming flesh and coming to live among us. And that’s rich. But, Easter is so much more than all of that, as great as all of that is.

Holy Week, the week leading up to Easter, is also known as Passion Week and commemorates the final days of Christ on Earth, leading up to His crucifixion, death, burial, and resurrection. It’s called Passion Week out of respect for Jesus’ passion in willingly going to the Cross to pay for our sins.

1 John 4:10

This is love: not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.

On that Friday, those who loved Him must have been terrified upon seeing their friend, whom they had spent over three years ministering alongside, nailed to two boards with three nails. They must have experienced devastating dismay upon seeing His body whipped and beaten, His head pierced with a crown of thorns, hanging from the Cross. At the time, they did not know that Jesus would rise from the grave and live again.

Their heads must have been spinning with the events that unfolded from the time they entered Jerusalem on Palm Sunday to that moment on Friday, watching their friend perish in great anguish. I can’t imagine how their hearts must have leaped with joy on that first Easter Sunday, realizing that Jesus had been resurrected from the dead.

Easter matters to me because it means I can experience eternal life. It means my chains are gone, and that I am free from the burden of sin. Easter means I can celebrate with great joy what God, by His own initiative, has done for me…and for you. Easter means it is possible to enter into a unique, personal relationship with God.

How about you? Why is Easter important to you?

Blessings,

The Devotional Guy™

Prayer:

Thank You, Lord, for taking the initiative to save me and so many others from our sins. This week, help me focus on Your willing sacrifice with all my heart, all my soul, all my mind, and all my strength. While we were yet sinners, You demonstrated Your great love for us, in that Jesus died for us so that we might experience forgiveness and receive eternal life. I am grateful for Your abundant grace and mercy. Thank You, Lord. Thank You. Amen.

I couldn’t agree with you more. Even as a child, while presents at Christmas were appreciated, I knew in my heart that the greatest present I received was salvation through Yeshua’s death on the execution stake. Resurrection Sunday is the best day of all.
