Psalm Saturday | A Faith Steadfast Like the Mountains

First, please let me thank you for taking the time to read this latest edition of our series, Psalm Saturday.” I pray you had a wonderful Labor Day holiday and that your September is off to a fabulous start. Many of you are adjusting to your kids being back at school and ramping up for the busy upcoming holiday season that is rapidly approaching. It’s hard for me to believe, but it’s almost time for another Operation Christmas Child National Collection Week (November 18-25, 2019).

Amidst the joy associated with celebration, making new friends, and our daily adventures, we’ve all been reminded of how fragile and difficult life can be as we lay eyes on the destruction caused by Hurrican Dorian in the Bahamas. In addition to the forces of nature, it seems like every weekend our hearts are sent reeling by yet another mass shooting.

For me, the Psalms are a source of great assurance and guidance as I experience the highs and lows of this life. Psalm 125, one of the “Songs of Ascent” that make up “The Great Hallal,” reminds me that even in the most difficult of times, I can take comfort in my eternal position anchored in my faith and trust in Jesus Christ.  If you’re a believer, then this is a promise you can claim too.

Even though we face a multitude of challenges and obstacles along our spiritual journey, God’s got us. He is our rock who stabilizes our faith. In Him, our faith is steadfast like the mountains, encompassed by His love for us. With God for us, who can stand against us? (Romans 8:31)

This is a truth that the ancient Hebrews remembered during their pilgrimages to Jerusalem to celebrate their annual festivals. They recognized that the assurance of their faith was not anchored in their own faithfulness, but secure because of the faithfulness of the object of their trust-the Lord Almighty.

Thankfully, it’s a promise you and I can count on too. We can trust that He won’t let go.

Psalm 125

A song of ascents.

1 Those who trust in the Lord are like Mount Zion.
It cannot be shaken; it remains forever.
2 Jerusalem—the mountains surround her.
And the Lord surrounds His people,
both now and forever.

3 The scepter of the wicked will not remain over the land allotted to the righteous,
so that the righteous will not apply their hands to injustice.
4 Do what is good, Lord, to the good,
to those whose hearts are upright.
5 But as for those who turn aside to crooked ways,
the Lord will banish them with the evildoers.

Peace be with Israel.
