Sunday Prayer | October 18, 2020

As I awake this morning, drink my coffee, and put the finishing touches on this morning’s Sunday School lesson, I am reminded of how much we need prayer.

As I recently shared with one of my most faithful readers, I believe that prayer is a practice and discipline that we all have ample room to grow in. I am not sure we ever master it fully. But, we can certainly grow in our knowledge and understanding of it. At least, I think we can.

Prayer is also a blessing and a privilege that we don’t fully appreciate as much as we could. Let’s face it: we live in a world that is tired of our thoughts and prayers and views them as empty and powerless. And while it can be so—or at least seem to be—-this doesn’t have to be true about prayer. Prayer can be delightful and powerful. Our prayers need not be empty recitations far removed from us and disconnected from our Lord. They can be deep, meaningful walks in the garden with God.

May the Holy Spirit grow that desire and ability in us all.

The Lord’s Prayer

This, then, is how you should pray:

“‘Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
10 your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
11 Give us today our daily bread.
12 And forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
13 And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from the evil one.

14 For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.15 But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.

Matthew 6:9-15 (NIV)

May the Lord shower You with His grace and mercy.

Blessings,

  1. Prayer is amazing, it is both super spiritual and also simple. It is a much needed lifeline to our Almighty God but it does not need to be complicated. We live in a world where tech giants are always trying to perfect the best communication devices/networks, but our Father God has already created the best in prayer connected to His Heavenly throne room. How blessed we are!

  2. Like the Pharisees, back in Jesus’ day, perhaps we’ve turned too many of our prayers into ritual speeches for own self-aggrandizement. God listens to REAL prayers—what a devote friend of mine used to call “carpet chewing “ prayer. Great post, Rainer. I finally scrolled to the bottom of the blog and learned your name! Blessings.
