My Monday Morning Cup | The Continous Process of Recovery

Last week certainly had its challenges. I know I spent a lot of time praying as I worked through some things while trying to understand several others. Surviving in recovery demands its fair share of introspection. After all, recovery is a process, not an event. And for the recovering addict, soul-searching is a continuous process. Discovering the plan God (as you understand Him) has for your life can be a daunting task, especially when you find yourself having to reevaluate the plan as you understood it.

Recovery has been a focal point the past few weeks as I continue working on an essay that I started writing in the summer that examines the transformation my life has undergone by the grace of God and through the gift of sobriety. Digging deep, as the instructor of our summer spiritual writing course exhorted our class to do, takes a degree of soul-searching that isn’t always easy to do. Honestly, I’m not always willing to do it. However, to write a piece that impacts people, you can easily find yourself doing things you’d rather not do.

Introspection means digging through boxes of mental memories that I’ve stored somewhere amid the cobwebs of my aging mind. Littered with emotions, the road of self-discovery isn’t an easy weekend drive. It requires considerable effort. Over time, I’ve found many memories aren’t as fresh as they were. Others remain as vivid as the day they happened. Effective writing, like recovery, means I have to be willing to do the work that is necessary.

Rummaging through the past to help people in the present, I am reminded that the principles I first learned in recovery help me gain insight, strength, experience, and hope. After years of denial and struggle, I came to realize that I was powerless over my addictions. A life of self-centeredness run amuck came to an unexpected halt when God, as I understood Him at the time, chose to intervene in my life. Traveling back in time to unpack who I was, share what God did, and show how life is different as a result ain’t all whine and roses (pun intended). Hopefully, once I’m done, I will have a piece of writing that will resonate with those who read it.

In the meantime, back to the keyboard to continue pounding out words.
