The Keys to Putting on the Full Armor of God

Over the past year, the Holy Spirit has continually reminded me that as a follower of Christ, I am immersed in a daily spiritual fight warring over my heart and mind. Every day, the devil prowls around attacking what I think and believe to be true about God and what I know to be true about myself. The enemy continually strives to create a barrier between me and my relationship with Jesus. And if I am not careful, the enemy can succeed, gaining a little ground here and there. However, as a disciple of Jesus, I need not fear.

As a believer in Christ, I know with confidence that I need not tremble at God’s enemies, spiritual or physical. The enemy has no authority over me. And believer, the enemy has no power over YOU either!

We can walk with a peaceful spirit because we know that the best way to overcome the fear of darkness is to steadfastly walk in the Light.

In the final part of his letter to the church in Ephesus, the Apostle Paul urges us to put on the spiritual Armor of God by daily immersing ourselves in the truth of God’s word, faithfully living in obedience, sharing the Good News of Jesus with others, and trusting Christ to lead us on the right path. We do this by sustaining ourselves on a steady diet of God’s word and truth while protecting our hearts and minds through constant prayer. We rely on our Great Helper, the Holy Spirit and Jesus, our Great Defender, to help us fight our battles. These are the keys to putting on the full armor of God.

¹⁰ Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. ¹¹ Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. ¹² For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. ¹³ Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. ¹⁴ Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, ¹⁵ and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. ¹⁶ In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; ¹⁷ and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, ¹⁸ praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end, keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints, ¹⁹ and also for me, that words may be given to me in opening my mouth boldly to proclaim the mystery of the gospel, ²⁰ for which I am an ambassador in chains, that I may declare it boldly, as I ought to speak.

Today, I urge you to remember to put on the full armor of God so that you are ready to fight off any attacks that the enemy throws your way. Do not fear. Do not be dismayed. Remember, that the Lord, your God, is with you wherever you go. His rod and staff will comfort you. In His faithfulness, He will protect you from the wiles of all evil.
