Music

Music has been a central part of my life for as long as I can remember. I’m sure that’s true for a lot of you. My mom is fond of telling the story of hearing a man playing classical piano as she would go on her daily walks while carrying me in her womb. When I was 7, my parents gave me a little acoustic guitar, a Steve Miller Band cassette, and two 45 rpm records-one by Tom T. Hall and another by “the King”, Elvis Presely. Along with that came my first record player and tape deck. The following year my folks bought a small electric keyboard. Then came an upright piano and piano lessons.

I grew up in a house filled with a diverse range of music. When I heard it, music made me feel good. It gave me a peace and solace that I needed. Over the years, it has also given me anquish and torment. But we’ll get to that later. Maybe. For now, know that I’ve been in love with music almost all my life. I love to listen to it. I love to make it. I play music today as part of my worship offering to the Lord, who saw fit to redeem a lost cause like me. The range of music I play is still diverse. My skills have been better in the past. But hey, that’s what practice is for. If you’re new to music, or just struggling, persevere. Keep playing. No matter what.
