God has attributes of goodness and greatness. Attributes of greatness include spirituality, life, personality, infinity, and constancy.
Spirituality: God is spirit. He is not composed of matter and does not possess a physical nature.
God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.
John 4:24 (ESV)
Life: God is characterized by life. He is a living God and His existence is independent in that He doesn’t need anything else to exist. His very nature is to be.
Psalm 84:2 (NIV)
Personality: God is an individual being with self-consciousness, will and the capabilities of feeling, choosing, and having a reciprocal relationship with other personal and social beings. God has a name that He assigns to himself and through which He reveals himself.
Infinity: God is infinite. He is unlimited and unlimitable. He is a limitless being, unlike anything we experience.
- Space: God is not subject to the limitations of space
- Time: God is not limited by time. Time does not apply to Him. He is not bound by time.
- Knowledge: God’s understanding and knowledge is immeasurable. He has access to all information, to all knowledge.
- Power: God is all-powerful. He can do all things which are proper objects of his power.
Grace to you and peace from him who is and who was and who is to come…Revelation 1:4 (ESV)
Constancy: God is unchanging. There is no quantitative or qualitative change in God.
Hebrews 13:8 (NIV) the same yesterday today
What do we mean when we say God is free? God does not have the limitations of a physical body. He is not limited to any geographical or spatial location. God is not bound by space or time. He has all power and knowledge. God is infinite.
God is the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow.
