5 Keys to Publishing an Engaging and Impactful Christian Blog

Hi there my fellow Christian blogger friend!

Publishing a Christian blog can be rewarding and fruitful. It can also prove to be challenging and even discouraging at times.

When I first launched The Devotional Guy™ in 2013, I began with an idea and a desire. The idea focused on sharing the love of God with others. The desire centered on creating a blog that engaged people—believers and non-believers—in a conversation about spiritual things.

For me, The Devotional Guy™ provides an outlet to write creatively about spiritual experiences and an avenue to explore the spiritual life, particularly as lived from a Christian perspective.

23 Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters,24 since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.

Colossians 3:23-24 (New International Version)

So what qualities produce a Christian blog that is valued by your readers?

In my decade-plus of blogging, I’ve learned that there are attributes that help make your blog engaging, impactful, and valuable to your readers. Here are 5 key qualities that contribute to publishing an engaging and impactful Christian blog:

  1. Authenticity: This is the one quality that reigns supreme above all others. God created you in His image. Your are wonderfully made. And—there is only ONE you. Your blog should reflect your personal spiritual experience. Be transparent. Be genuine. Be vulnerable. A Christian blog that is engaging and impactful resonates most when the writer is willing to share the highs and lows that they experience along their spiritual journey. Write about what you know; not what you think people believe you should know. My fellow blogger, Beth, demonstrates this effectively on her blog, Lessons from a Lab.
  2. Grounded in the Bible: A friend of mine likes to say, “Let’s put some Bible on it!” Your blog should be grounded in a solid biblical foundation. You should regularly reference God’s word. You must strive to interpret Scripture accurately. As you provide insights, teachings, and applications it’s up to you to ensure that they align with Christian principles and values. Seek the counsel of others whenever you aren’t sure of your assumptions. Ideas in isolation always seem like they are on point. Do yourself a favor and consult with others whenever you are led to share some sort of new revelation. My fellow blogger, Bridget, is solid at grounding her posts in the Word.
  3. Write Clearly and with an Engaging Tone: For a Christian blog to be engaging and impactful clarity and tone are crucial. You may have something solid to share but if your writing is ambiguous or harsh your readers will quickly scroll and swipe to someone else’s blog. Your writing style should be clear, concise, and engaging. This allows readers to understand and connect with the content easily. You can make complex ideas more accessible by employing stories, anecdotes, and relatable examples. My friend David—blogger-in-chief at David’s Daily Dose, excels at this.
  4. Relevant and Timely Content: A great Christian blog addresses topics and issues that are relevant to its target audience. It should tackle current cultural, social, and theological issues from a Christian perspective, offering insights and guidance that speak to the readers’ concerns and challenges. My buddy from across the pond, Andy, does this extremely effectively. Checkout the Berry Bunch website to see how Andy and his family address current topics and issues.
  5. Take a Prayerful and God-centered Approach: One thing that I’ve learned over the years is that in order to consistently publish a Christian blog that is engaging and impactful your content must grounded in prayer and girded in a reliance on God. Ultimately, your content should point readers toward a deeper relationship with God by encouraging spiritual growth and a greater understanding of His Word.

Friend, whether you are just starting out or you’ve been blogging for awhile, I pray these 5 suggestions will help you find your unique writing style, identify your target audience, and achieve your ministry goals.

May the Lord bless you with His abundant grace and unending mercy as you continue to be the salt and light in an increasingly darkening world.

  2. Thanks, Bridget. I love the image of sitting down with a friend over a cup of coffee. In a way, that’s really the niche I’m hoping to carve out for myself. I appreciate your comments and I’m grateful for your insights. Many blessings.

  5. I love your 5 blogger tips, Rainer, and thanks for the shout out!

Yes, it’s important to be engaging, but without #’s 1 & 4–authenticity and relevance—readers will soon look elsewhere.

I’ve discovered most successful bloggers don’t take a “cookie cutter” approach, but write in their own unique way and tell their own special stories—like Beth, of Lessons from a Lab.

Thanks for sharing some fresh tips with your readers. I’m eating it up, brother!
