Happy 4th of July! Identifying 7 Ingredients Essential to Freedom

Freedom is a complex concept that can be interpreted in a variety of ways depending on the context of the conversation. That said, several key factors exist that help attain and preserve freedom. Here are 7 ingredients that I believe are essential to freedom:

  1. Individual Rights and Liberties: At the top of the list of ingredients necessary for freedom stands respecting and protecting individual rights and liberties. Fundamental rights like freedom of speech, religion, assembly, and the right to a fair trial are crucial for freedom. Another key component of freedom is ensuring that individuals have the autonomy to make choices and pursue their own paths. In America, we should be able to agree to disagree and respect each other’s points of views and enjoy the freedom to be ourselves.
  2. Rule of Law: In order for freedom to flourish, a society must set boundaries. A society built on the rule of law promotes freedom. Laws are applied equally to all citizens, regardless of their status, influence, or celebrity. Laws must be transparent, predictable, and enforced impartially. The law can not be applied arbitrarily if a society and its people are to truly be free.
  3. Democracy and Political Participation: Voting is vital for freedom. Democracy allows people to have a voice in the decision-making processes of their nation. Free and fair elections, political participation, and the ability to express diverse viewpoints through peaceful means are important aspects of freedom. An engaged and informed citizenry plays a significant role in safeguarding individual freedoms.
  4. Equal Access to Education and Information: Education empowers individuals to think critically, make informed choices, and participate fully in society. Access to quality education, along with the availability of unbiased information, fosters intellectual freedom and equips individuals with the tools to exercise their rights effectively.
  5. Just and Equal Economic Opportunities: Economic freedom provides individuals with the ability to pursue their economic aspirations and improve their well-being. This includes the freedom to choose one’s occupation, engage in entrepreneurial activities, and benefit from a fair and competitive market. Access to basic needs, social mobility, and the absence of economic coercion are vital for individual freedom.
  6. Social Equality and Inclusion: Ensuring equality and inclusion for all members of society is essential for freedom. Discrimination based on race, gender, ethnicity, religion, or other factors undermines freedom. Everyone should have a seat at the table. When all individuals have equal opportunities, are treated with dignity, and have their voices heard, freedom thrives..
  7. Respect for Human Rights: All life is sacred. Upholding and protecting human rights is a cornerstone of freedom. Freedom from torture, arbitrary detention, and other forms of human rights abuses are vital for a truly free society. Governments, institutions, and individuals must respect and defend these rights to maintain and advance freedom.

Achieving and maintaining freedom is an ongoing process that requires vigilance and collective effort.

“Those who deny freedom to others deserve it not for themselves, and, under a just God, cannot long retain it.”

Abraham Lincoln, letter to H.L. Pierce, April 6, 1859

You are free to think and believe what you want to think and believe. That being said, you don’t live in a vacuum. Freedom demands we each take the responsibility to keep our country thriving and flourishing seriously. Otherwise, freedom will be lost.

I’m thankful to all those who gave their all so that we might be free. Thanks for reading. Leave me a comment below to let me know you were here.

God bless you and God bless America!
