Drawing on Drawing to Enhance My Work Skills Toolkit

Dear Reader:

If you’ve been following my blog for a little bit, you know that about a year ago I took up drawing as a means towards better wellbeing.

Since starting my drawing endeavor, I’ve discovered it to be a valuable skill to have in my proverbial problem-solving toolkit.

I’ve found drawing enhances my decision-making process by helping me perceive problems more visually and thus giving me a hand up at breaking down complex problems.

Drawing allows me to visualize my thoughts and ideas. When I’m sitting in front of my drawing pad sketching, I’m exercising my perception and perspective. I am learning how I see something compared to what it is and then translating that to the page. I’m trying to get the details right.

I’ve found that drawing helps me break down complex problems into more manageable parts. This allows me to see connections and relationships that otherwise might not be obvious to the untrained eye.

Why is that important?

In my job as Senior Operations Manager at a Dallas-based homeless ministry, I spend a good portion of my day solving problems and making decisions. Some days, it’s all I do.

Drawing not only relaxes my mind and body, but it enhances my ability to solve problems and improves my ability make decisions quickly. For me, this is crucial and vital to successfully doing my part to help the homeless people residing in Dallas.

What creative skill or other recreational outlet have you found enhances your ability to do your work better?

I pray that God showers you with His kindness and goodness this week.

Pray for our people. The excessive heat indexes and hot temperatures continue to swamp much of the area surrounding us. Stay hydrated.

  1. Yes, it is the pause of the mind that makes the difference whether it’s drawing, writing or another creative outlet. For someone else it might be cooking or making cards. It’s finding something to distract your mind from whatever it focuses on daily, I believe.
Thanks for reading and sharing your thoughts.

  2. Definitely it’s the ‘pause’ of the mind that makes the difference. Writing does that for me. It allows my brain to slow down and I start processing things better, see things clearer.

  3. It does allow me to carve out a space to focus on and through that experience a period of peace.

  4. Wow, it’s amazing to hear how much drawing can help with decisions and difficult situations. I’m not a good artist, but I like the idea. It sounds like a peaceful way to slow down and connect.
