What music did you listen to once upon a time that you don’t listen to anymore?

Yesterday marked the anniversary of John Mellencamp’s grand opus, Lonesome Jubilee. The follow up to his incredible album, Scarecrow, was released on August 24, 1987. It’s the second time in the last couple of weeks that Mellencamp and his music has crossed the radar of my memories. The first reminder came during a reunion with a couple of old friends—one of whom was listening to Jack and Diane, the iconic song off Mellencamp’s American Fool album.

Music has played a central role in my life as I’m sure it probably has yours.

Thanks to the geniuses at Apple Music, I can spend the weekend revisiting the catalog of a singer and songwriter I once loved but haven’t listened to in good a long while.

How about you, my friend?

What music did you listen to once upon a time that you don’t listen to anymore?

Mellencamp has a new record out—released earlier this Summer. And yes, I am going to go and give it a listen.

Praying you’ll have a blessed weekend!

  3. I love Dylan, too. I wrote a post a few years ago about his Gospel songs. https://thedevotionalguy.blog/2020/08/24/uncovering-the-forgotten-gospel-songs-of-bob-dylan/
I think having an eclectic musical palette keeps life interesting.

  4. Now days, I listen mostly to instrumental music—classical and jazz—that could be considered easy listening. I also love the Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir. Finally, I was born a little late, but I’m a folkie. Dylan, Peter, Paul & Mary, and Joan Baez are my favs.

  6. Back in high school I listened to the Christian heavy metal band Stryper. My favorite song on their debut album was “To Hell with the Devil.” Their lead singer, Michael Sweet had an amazing voice—right up there with Steve Perry, from Journey.

  7. Thanks for commenting, Loring. Yes! Remember when you tried to collect all the albums of a particular artist? Streaming sure has changed things. Thanks for reading!

  8. I too take advantage of today’s technology in revisiting my music since I gave away my vast vinyl collection to my nephew. To many artists and genres to be fair.
