10 Things I’ve Learned From #Blogtober So Far

This year, like I did last year, I decided to partake in the blogging challenge issued annually every October known as #Blogtober.

The challenge is to publish a blogpost daily through the month of October. Pretty straightforward.

1. Posting every single day is challenging. Life gets in the way. There are a sea of possibilities competing for your undivided attention.

2. New topics are hard to come up with every day. Because of this fact, I think planning ahead helps. Without a plan, I think your enthusiasm wanes quickly.

3. Having a theme helps. For instance, my theme going into #Blogtober was generosity. It’s been a great topic to explore. Sometimes, I’ve got the attention span of a gnat.

4. But, having a theme gets old after a couple of weeks. Know that it’s okay to shift and change things up. At least, I am.

5. You can’t ignore what’s happening in the world around you. Some matters demand you speak up.

6. You will get a bump in your stats. I’ve seen a spike in visitors, views, likes, and even comments. I tend to get ample visitors and views. They don’t translate into likes or generate a ton of comments.

7. You will gain new followers. The flurry of fresh content exposes you to more readers. I’ve seen this lead to an increase in the number of people who follow my blog.

8. I’ve discovered that in addition to #Blogtober, a number of other #—tober’s exist…like #inktober, #progtober, #spooktober, and a whole growing host of “—tober” hashtags.

9. #Blogtober participation seems to be down this year compared to last year. Maybe it’s all too much.

10. The other thing I’ve discovered, I think due in part to blogging and drawing, is that I like ghost stories, Halloween, and spooky movies.

These are 10 things I’ve learned from participating in #Blogtober this year. How about you? What have you learned?

Me & T enjoying @Candlelight.concerts
At the Filter Building on White Rock Lake

Friday night, Terri and I enjoyed listening to a string quartet performing Halloween music. Did you know there was such a thing as a genre focused solely on Halloween music?

Blogging takes effort. It also requires planning, preparation, and patience. It’s important to remember to enjoy the experience. That’s true no matter what you do.

Candlelight concerts feature a wide variety of music spanning multiple genres and generations and performed with a classical twist. The musicians are extremely skilled and the crowd seems to really get into the performance. Friday night’s musical adventure featured a Halloween theme. The venue, the Filter Building on White Rock Lake, would be a perfect venue to film a horror movie. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a beautiful facility. There’s just something about seeing it at night with the moon glowing in the sky that adds a spooky vibe to the atmosphere.

I pray you have a spectacular weekend!

  2. I like that comment “I want to be home when someone knocks.” Thanks, David. I almost didn’t make it the last 2-3 days. I’m proud of you for giving it a go.

  3. “the attention span of a gnat” 😂 … I applaud you for all the hard work! It is not easy posting every day.

  4. I tried, brother, and I didn’t even make it a week! Here’s a shout-out to all the daily posters. 🎉

I think the algorithms favor those who post more often. I noticed my overall stats trending up, but with fewer views, likes, and comments per post. I gained a few new followers as well.

In the final analysis, I hate to post when I don’t have time to engage with readers. Posting is like putting out a welcome mat, and I want to be at home when someone knocks.
    Blessings, my brother!
