Please Don’t Forget the Coffee

When you live with six cats funny things happen. Like finding toilet paper rolls in the middle of the floor…

Yes. Six. Cats.

If I’d said four dogs, you’d likely think that’s a lot but you’d finish your coffee and move on. Odds are when you read “six cats” you spewed your coffee all over your laptop.

You do you.

A common thought is that creatives work in isolation. While there’s truth to that, I’ve also grown to believe that artists thrive in community. This includes the actual making of something—be it music, writing, visual art, or whatever—as well as the sharing of the finished work.

Finding your community is important.

But, it’s not something that can be forced on you or that can be easily created as part of organizational programming (think corporate culture, here).

I’ve grown fond of my drawing class community that meets Monday nights. I’m not so fond of the idea of finding a community as part of church membership. That just feels too contrived.

For community to work you need several components like shared interests, similar values and beliefs (while welcoming a diverse range of perspectives), common goals, active participation, a good location compatible for each individual, and a sense of support and encouragement.

Building relationships is hard.

Bonding over a common, shared interest fuels a given community, like my drawing class.

That said, many creatives do a good chunk of their work in isolation. That can be true even if we are in the company of other like-minded people who are working on a similar project or problem. Each member of the creative process has to do their bit.

I love creativity and I love cats. And coffee. Please don’t forget the coffee.

I pray your October is going well. If you’re participating in #Blogtober or #Inktober, I pray you’re rocking it!

The long-awaited rain is finally falling here as temperatures continue to cool off. It’s a welcome change in the weather.

Abundant blessings,

  1. Ha! Good! We love our crew. We are glad to be their caretakers and human entertainment. Our home is better for them being in it.

I enjoyed your reflections on creativity, whether it be singularly or in a group. It had me pondering whether our wee Rothes Rooks chess group could be a creative group by definition?
God bless you and Terri today 🙏
