God is the most central figure in our Christian faith. Our God is the Alpha and Omega; the beginning and the end. God is the Creator of all that exists—all that was, is, and will be. Exploring God’s divine names and characteristics is a profound journey that can deepen our relationship with Him as we seek to comprehend His divine nature.

I. Elohim – The Creator God
One of the earliest names for God in the Bible is Elohim. This name emphasizes God’s role as the Creator of the universe. All that was, is, and will be. In Genesis 1:1, we read, “In the beginning, God (Elohim) created the heavens and the earth.”
This name underscores God’s power and sovereignty over all of creation.
II. Yahweh – The Covenant God
Yahweh is often translated as “the LORD” in the Bible. This divine name signifies God’s covenant relationship with His chosen people. God revealed this name to Moses, declaring, “I AM WHO I AM” (Exodus 3:14).
Yahweh signifies God’s faithfulness, unchanging nature, and His commitment to His promises.
III. Jehovah Jireh – The Provider
In Genesis 22:14, Abraham called God “Jehovah Jireh,” which means “The LORD Will Provide.”
This divine name highlights God’s role as our provider, meeting our needs, and supplying us with His abundant grace.
IV. Jehovah Rapha – The Healer
In Exodus 15:26, God reveals Himself as “Jehovah Rapha,” the LORD who heals.
This holy name reassures us of God’s ability to bring physical, emotional, and spiritual healing to our lives.
V. Jehovah Shalom – The God of Peace
In Judges 6:24, Gideon named an altar “Jehovah Shalom,” meaning “The LORD Is Peace.”
This name reminds us that God brings peace to our troubled hearts and turbulent circumstances.

VI. Jehovah Nissi – The Banner or Victor
Moses named an altar “Jehovah Nissi” in Exodus 17:15, symbolizing that God is our banner, our protector in battles. He gives us victory over our spiritual adversaries.
VII. El Shaddai – The Almighty God
El Shaddai is a divine name that emphasizes God’s omnipotence and sufficiency.
God introduced Himself as El Shaddai to Abraham in Genesis 17:1, reassuring him of His ability to fulfill His promises.
VIII. Jehovah Sabaoth – The LORD of Hosts
This name portrays God as the commander of angelic armies and emphasizes His sovereignty over all. It’s used throughout the Bible to remind us of God’s supreme authority.
IX. Abba Father – The Loving Father
In the New Testament, Jesus teaches us to address God as “Abba Father,” emphasizing the intimate, loving relationship we can have with God through faith in Christ.
X. Immanuel – God with Us
First prophesied in Isaiah 7:14 and fulfilled in the birth of Jesus (Matthew 1:23), Immanuel signifies that God is with us. It underscores His presence in our lives, providing comfort and guidance.

Exploring the divine names of God and digging deeper into the characteristics can be a transformational journey. Each name reveals a part of God’s divine nature and displays His willingness to engage with us personally.
Friend, I encourage you to meditate on these various names of God. I think that if you do, you will grow in your understanding of God’s love, power, and faithfulness. You will gain a greater appreciation of who God is. Ultimately, meditating on God’s divine names and characteristics will draw you closer to the One who is the source of all that is good.

There is a beautiful book for children about the names of Jesus, “Unwrapping the Names of Jesus for Kids, ” by Asheritah Ciuciu. (There is an adult version for Advent). My littles love it and had all 9 names memorized in a about 3 days (As did I!) They ask to recite them to me every night after being tucked in. Encourage them to know God’s character early. It will be a comfort to them all their lives.
