Did Jesus Absolve Us From Our Sins?

Words matter. I love words. I’m a bit of a word nerd. Recently, Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary featured “absolve” as its Word-of-the-Day. If you have the app, this feature may be familiar to you.

According to Merriam-Webster, the word absolve means to “free them from a responsibility or commitment, or from the consequences of guilt.”

Merriam-Webster Defines “Absolve”

The act of absolving someone can be seen as loosening them from the hold that responsibility or guilt has on them, like releasing them from blame or the penalty of sin.

I wondered is “absolve” the right word to describe what Jesus did on the Cross through His death, burial, and resurrection? is absolving equal to atoning? My curious mind wanted to know because words matter especially when sharing the Gospel.

So I decided to test out the Bible Chat app that I recently downloaded. Bible Chat is a revolutionary AI-powered app with a mission to spread the Word of God, draw all people closer to the Lord, and empower the Church as a whole.

And sure enough…the Bible Chat app responded:

“Indeed, according to the Bible, Jesus Christ, through His sacrificial death on the cross, offered the opportunity for the forgiveness of sins. In the book of Matthew, Jesus states, “For this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins” (Matthew 26:28, ESV). Therefore, through faith in Jesus and repentance of sins, one can receive forgiveness and reconciliation with God.”

Yes, dear reader, Jesus Christ—100% God, 100% human—lived a perfect, sinless life, was nailed to a Cross where He died, was buried, and resurrected three days later absolving us of our sins. That’s the GOOD NEWS!

Out of His love for us, God the Father offered His beloved Son as a blood sacrifice to pave a surefooted path of reconciliation for us. Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life that leads us into right relationship and good standing with God.

But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

Romans 5:8 (NIV)

I pray that this good news fuels your day and that you are compelled to share it with those in your sphere of influence.

Blessings,

  1. I appreciate your feedback, David. I think the sheer volume of information we consume makes shorter pieces more effective. You should definitely checkout the app. It’s honestly a fun learning tool. Thanks for reading my post and commenting. Peace.

  2. Amen, brother. I’m a bit of a word lover, too! It’s interesting to hear about an app that uses artificial intelligence (AI) to answer theological questions. I will check this out.
By the way, I always enjoy your offerings, but the latest —short and sweet and with one strong point—have been stellar. Chalk it up to my 🐿️ 🧠 squirrel brain, but these stick with me better.
    Blessings, brother!
