What You Watching ?

One way we unwind is binging on new shows. We first discovered binging a decade or so ago, starting with binging The Closer and Downton Abbey on DVD. Of course, we really got into streaming with shows like “Stranger Things” and “The Killing”.

Terri and I love binging. Perhaps, this seems strange to you. Maybe, you do it, too.

We’ve also watched series that drop weekly, but that’s not nearly as satisfying. Binging a show is very similar to sitting down with a good book and reading it front to back over the course of a few days.

The sea of streaming services have tweaked our collective television viewing experience. Growing up, you only had the option of watching your favorite TV show on a specific day and at its scheduled time slot.

We are currently working our way back through Bosch on Amazon Prime. We were early subscribers to Netflix. We occasionally subscribe to BritBox. We watch a lot through Apple TV+.

Over the weekend, we caught Michael Douglas portraying Benjamin Franklin. Douglas does a phenomenal job depicting one of our Founding Fathers and the entire show is extremely well done. We recently watched Masters of the Air—another historical drama.

Of course, we binged The Chosen—both at home and in the movie theaters. Early this year, Terri and I devoted a couple of weekend afternoons to hanging out at the cinema together and watching Season 4 of The Chosen.

Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

1 Corinthians‬ ‭13‬:‭4‬-‭7‬ ‭ESV‬‬

Aside from simply being fun to do something together, like driving out of town to catch a concert, binging shows provides us with a shared experience that creates opportunities for quality time together while fostering communication between each other.

It gives us an opportunity to shut off our brains from the day to day and focus on something else—like solving the latest whodunit.

How about you?

Are you a binger? If so, what show are you binging on right now?

Be sure and tell somebody about Jesus today!

Praying for you.

  1. Thanks for sharing, Alan. We love the FBI and Chicago shows as well. I will have to checkout the other shows you mentioned. We have also watched Blue Lights. It’s superb.

In general we don’t watch nearly as much TV as we used to; in fact our TV is only on in the late evenings – the exceptions would be sport events. In recent times we have watched many of the US dramas such as the FBI series, the Chicago series. We recently binged the 6 seasons of Chesapeake Shores; a nice gentle watch. We are looking forward to the second season of Blue Lights, an Irish police drama, which you may find on Britbox.
