As I mentioned in my previous post Even the Angels are Still Sleeping, music has played a big role in healing from the recent loss of Terri’s sister. For Terri, it’s been a rediscovery of old forgotten favorites. For me, it’s involved journeying back into the audio vaults and thinking about how music influences our lives.
One of the discussions that the death of a loved one brings to the surface involves deciding what music to play at the various services. Dying in America involves several stages: viewing and visitation, memorial/funeral, and gravesite. There’s an opportunity to share music in various formats (live, recorded, video).
Do not despise prophecies, but test everything; hold fast what is good. Abstain from every form of evil.
1 Thessalonians 5:20-22 ESV
You can learn a lot about out a person from the music they listen to. You also discover a lot about a marriage from hearing one spouse share what music they think their departed spouse liked. Sometimes we paint a picture in our heads that’s not exactly true.

I’ve gone back and listened to old Clash and Soul Asylum songs as well as a mix of artists like Elvis (Costello), Simple Minds, and Boomtown Rats.
In part, I’m caught in the musical duality of grief and mourning while looking forward to furthering my work as a visual artist. After all, life means we need to chew gum and walk simultaneously.

Life is rarely this or that. It’s usually both/and.
What’s spinning on your turntable or streaming on your audio device?
Until my next post…
God is good. All the time.
No matter what.
Know you are loved.
Praying for you. Praying for America.

Ranier, blessings to you and Terri. My wife and I have been peeling back the layers of music experienced in our lives. Highlights of Ed Sullivan’s television show have allowed us to rediscover some of these forgotten soundtracks.
