What if Colors Made a Sound?

Have you ever wondered if colors make a sound?

We know that there are qualities of color to sound. For instance, a sound can be blue or it can be bright.

What if colors made a sound?

Researchers and scholars don’t believe colors themselves produce sound—at least not in a literal, audible way,. However, ideas and phenomena exist that reveal a connection between color and sound.

The phenomenon of synesthesia involves people experiencing one sense through another. For example, they might “hear” a certain sound when they see a specific color.

Several musicians and artists have explored the relationship between color and sound throughout history:

  1. Wassily Kandinsky – a painter, Kandinsky believed that art could create multisensory experiences. Associating colors with musical tones, Kandinsky believed that abstract shapes and hues could evoke emotional responses akin to the responses music generates. Talking about his own work, he often spoke about a deep connection that existed between his visual work and the art of music.
  2. Scriabin – Alexander Scriabin, an innovative Russian composer, created a system where he paired musical notes with specific colors. Scriabin’s symphony Prometheus: The Poem of Fire included a color organ meant to project the corresponding colors during a performance.
  3. Georgia O’Keeffe –Best known for her flower paintings, O’Keeffe is said to have had a deep connection to music, particularly classical music. Discussing her creative process, O’Keeffe shared her belief that sound influenced the shapes and colors she used.
  4. Isaac Newton –in his work titled Opticks, the English polymath Newton explored the idea that the spectrum of light is analogous to a musical scale, causing him to map out relationships between colors and musical notes.
  5. David Hockney – Hockney has often spoken of listening to music as he works, allowing it to inform the mood and color palette of his paintings.

See… I’m not crazy. Hah!

Speaking of art work, I am ecstatic to share that my work has been accepted into the 59th Annual Membership Show hosted by the Richardson Civic Arts Society.

My entries are three photographs and will be hanging as part of the show at the Gallery at the Collin College Plano campus.

The show will opens to the public on Monday, September 23rd with viewing hours Monday through Thursday 9:00AM to 8:00PM and Friday, 9:00AM to 3:00PM.

Woohoo!

Until my next post…

God is good. All the time.

No matter what.

Know you are loved.

Praying for you. Praying for America.
