Celebrating the First Sunday of Advent

The first Sunday of Advent marks the beginning of the Christian liturgical year and is a time of anticipation and preparation for the coming of Jesus Christ. It focuses on hope and looking forward to the arrival of Christ, both in remembrance of His birth and in the steadfast anticipation of His return.

The people who walked in darkness
    have seen a great light;
those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness,
    on them has light shone.

Isaiah 9:2 ESV

What is the Christian liturgical year?

The Christian liturgical year is a beautifully structured cycle of seasons and feasts that begins with Advent, shaping the year for many Christian denominations worldwide. More than just a calendar, it serves as a spiritual framework, guiding believers to reflect on, celebrate, and remember the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, as well as other significant events in the story of our faith. Its purpose goes beyond marking time; it invites us to order our lives in a way that honors God, fostering a deeper sense of His peace in our hearts, souls, and minds throughout the year.

For to us a child is born,
    to us a son is given;
and the government shall be upon his shoulder,
    and his name shall be called
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
    Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Of the increase of his government and of peace
    there will be no end,
on the throne of David and over his kingdom,
    to establish it and to uphold it
with justice and with righteousness
    from this time forth and forevermore.
The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.

Isaiah 9:6-7 ESV

An Advent Meditation

The season of Advent is a call to rekindle our sense of hope—a hope that, in the biblical sense, is not mere wishful thinking but a confident expectation rooted in God’s unchanging promises. The prophet Isaiah spoke to a weary people walking in darkness, carrying the weight of hopelessness. Yet, he proclaimed a powerful message: the promise of a Messiah, a light that would pierce their darkness. We can rest confidently in our Lord God. He keeps His promises.

As we begin this Advent season, my encouragement to you is that you carve out the time to reflect on the areas in your life where you long for hope. Isaiah’s words remind us that true hope is anchored in the faithfulness of God, who always fulfills His promises. Jesus, the Wonderful Counselor and Prince of Peace, entered our world to bring light, salvation, and the assurance that our hope in Him is secure. Again, we can stand firm in our faith because God keeps His promises.

An Advent Prayer:

Gracious God, as we begin this Advent season, open our hearts to receive your light and love. Help us to foster hope in our lives and to remember that our hope is grounded in your promise fulfilled through Jesus Christ. Guide us to be a beacon of hope to those around us, that they too might see the great light of Christ in us. We pray all this in the mighty and powerful name of Jesus. Amen.

An Invitation:

This week, take a few moments each day to reflect on the promises of God that bring you hope. Consider writing down one promise each day and meditate on it. Share these reflections with a friend or family member to encourage one another in hope.

May this Advent season fill you with renewed hope and joy.

Grace and peace,
