In Anticipation of Turning the Page in a New Year

One of the first things I ever had published occurred long ago when I was a rebellious teenager sitting in a high school English class. It was a poem titled Alone. If I recall correctly, my poem got published in the school paper and later in a commercial poetry anthology (whose name I’ve long forgotten). But, honestly, I was high a lot back then. So who knows…

Since I started blogging, I’ve run across a number of food, recovery, and poetry blogs, many of whom I follow and read regularly.

Over the years, I’ve written a few modern psalms, prayers, and poems.

Here’s a new poem I wanted to share with you in anticipation of a new year and for those of you considering turning over a new leaf. It’s called Drunken.

Drunken

I been drunk on women.

I been drunk on wine.

I been drunk on religion.

I been drunk on time.

I been drunk on power
and the thrill of the climb.
I been drunk on anger;
Let it poison my mind.

I been drunk on silence
and the secrets it keeps.

I been drunk on sorrow;
Cried myself to sleep.

I been drunk on freedom;
Felt its fleeting embrace.
I been drunk on beauty;
Lost in time and space.

I been drunk on longing
for what’s never been.
I been drunk on forgiveness
and the hope it brings in.

I been drunk on living
and the lessons I’ve learned.

But the sweetest intoxication

I’ve ever known,
is the love I’ve been given

in Christ, my King.

Anyways… I encourage you to continue learning and growing in the year ahead. What are you looking forward to in 2025?

Until my next post…

Grace and peace,
