Celebrating the Second Sunday of Advent: A Time to Prepare the Way

As we light the second candle on the Advent wreath this Sunday, we step further into the sacred season of waiting and preparation. Advent, a time of anticipation and hope, encourages us to reflect on the coming of Christ, both in His humble birth in Bethlehem and His future return in glory. This second Sunday of Advent invites us to focus on preparation—not just externally but within our hearts.

The Candle of Peace

The second candle, called the “Candle of Peace,” reminds us of John the Baptist’s call to “prepare the way of the Lord” (Isaiah 40:3; Matthew 3:3).

As a forerunner to Christ, John heralded a message of repentance and transformation, urging people to turn their hearts back to God. John the Baptist’s cry echoes through the centuries, calling us to clear away the distractions and obstacles that prevent us from fully experiencing the peace Christ offers.

Friend—What stands in your way of worshipping Christ fully, with your all?

Peace is more than the absence of conflict; it’s a profound sense of wholeness and harmony rooted in God’s presence. We can experience this peace even in the midst of turmoil, uncertainty, and loss.

As we light this candle, we’re reminded to seek this divine peace in our hearts and extend it to others.

Matthew 3:3 ESV

For this is he who was spoken of by the prophet Isaiah when he said, “The voice of one crying in the wilderness: ‘Prepare the way of the Lord; make his paths straight.’”

Preparing Our Hearts

The busyness of the holiday season can often overshadow the quiet reflection Advent calls for. Getting ready for Christmas isn’t simply just about decorating, gift shopping, or planning celebrations. Preparing for Christmas is about making room for Christ in our lives—our hearts, our souls, our minds.

Here are a few ways we can prepare during this second week of Advent:

  1. Reflect on Scripture
Meditate on passages like Isaiah 40:1-11 or Luke 3:1-6, which speak of preparation and God’s promises. Let these verses guide your prayers and thoughts as you align your heart with God’s purposes.
  2. Repent and Reconnect
Advent is a season of turning back to God. Take time to examine your life and confess areas where you’ve strayed from His will. Seek His forgiveness and renew your commitment to follow Him.
  3. Practice Peace
In a world often filled with tension and division, be a peacemaker. Reach out to someone with whom you’ve had conflict, or offer kindness to someone who needs it. Let God’s peace flow through you to others.
  4. Pause and Pray
Amid the hustle, create moments of stillness. Light a candle, sit quietly, and invite God’s peace to fill your heart. Use this time to center yourself on Christ, the Prince of Peace.

Looking Forward

Advent reminds us that peace is both a present gift and a future promise. As we prepare to celebrate Christ’s birth, we also look forward to His second coming, when He will establish everlasting peace. This dual focus fills us with hope, even as we navigate the challenges of today.

May this second Sunday of Advent draw you closer to the heart of God, filling you with His peace and guiding you as you prepare the way for Him in your life and in the world around you.

How can you make space in your life for God’s peace during this Advent season?

2nd Sunday Advent Prayer:
Dear God, as we light the second candle of Advent, please help us prepare our hearts for Your second coming as we celebrate the advent of Your first arrival among us. Help us return to You as You return to us. Clear away the distractions and burdens that prevent us from experiencing Your peace. Teach us to trust in Your promises and to live as peacemakers in a world rife with conflict. Help us be ambassadors of peace in a world that desperately needs You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Until next time…

Grace and peace,
