Growing People: Biblical Nourishment for the Next Generation

My boss, Rodney, likes to say “We grow people, Rainer. That’s what we do.” And he’s right. Intentionally investing in others, particularly the up and coming generation, is a rich legacy to leave in our wake. And, it’s ultimately our fulfillment of the Great Commission.

Matthew 28:16-20 NIV

16 Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go. 17 When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted. 18 Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

Investing in others, particularly young leaders, can be one of the best ways to leave a lasting impact on the world around us. If you are mentoring someone in your family, workplace, church, or community—encouraging them to grow in their God-given abilities and providing them with nourishment for their spiritual journey helps them thrive and flourish in the plan God has designed especially for them.

It’s no surprise that Scripture offers timeless wisdom and inspiration for us to share with the next generation, as well as those we love and those we encounter along our way. Being present for others as they navigate challenges and step into their calling is a game-changer.

Here are six powerful verses to guide and nourish others:

1 Timothy 4:12
“Don’t let anyone think less of you because you are young. Be an example to all believers in what you say, in the way you live, in your love, your faith, and your purity.”

This verse reminds young leaders that their influence is not defined by their age but by their character. Encouraging them to live as examples of Christ-like integrity can be transformative.

Joshua 1:9
“This is my command—be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”

Leadership often requires courage, especially in the face of uncertainty. This passage reassures young leaders that God’s presence empowers them to face challenges with boldness.

Proverbs 3:5-6 NIV
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take.”

Making decisions is daunting, but this verse calls on people to rely on God’s wisdom rather than their own. Seeking the Lord’s guidance helps people stay the course and remain aligned with His purpose.

Philippians 4:13 NIV
“For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength.”

Encourage people to draw their strength from Christ. No matter how great the challenge, we are equipped through Him.

Jeremiah 29:11 NIV
“For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.”

We all need hope and assurance in the plans God has for us. These especially true for young, aspiring leaders. Our life experience helps us to reassure others of God’s faithfulness in keeping His promises. If we do this, we can bolster someone’s faith and give them confidence to pursue their calling.

2 Timothy 1:7 NIV
“For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline.”

This verse challenges us to reject fear and embrace the power, love, and discipline that only the Lord provides. God calls us to step boldly into our roles with faith and purpose. Boldness is the key ingredient molding the recipe of our lives. How bold are you?

Encouraging the next generation with Scripture equips them to handle the twists and turns of the road ahead. Even better, it nourishes their faith. As mentors and discipleship partners—growers of people—our role is to guide, support, and inspire people to embrace God’s calling on their lives.

Who in your life can you encourage by using God’s Word to strengthen them today?

I pray we are bold enough to commit to pouring into the next generation, shaping them into individuals who reflect God’s love, wisdom, and strength in all they do. If we don’t teach them, someone else just may and that won’t necessarily turn out pretty.

Be a difference-maker today!

Until my next post…

Grace and peace,
