The Third Sunday of Advent: The Candle of Joy

The third Sunday of Advent marks a shift in our Advent journey, inviting us to celebrate the joy that comes from the arrival of Christ. Traditionally, on this day, believers light a pink candle, as a reminder that even in the midst of waiting, we have ample reason to rejoice.

Advent is a season waiting with joy. Our joy is not rooted in our fleeting circumstances but in the eternal truth that God has come near to us in Jesus Christ.

Luke 2:10 NIV

But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people.

It’s easy to let the busyness of the Christmas season overwhelm us, causing joy to feel like a distant ideal. Advent reminds us to pause and reflect on the deep, abiding joy that Christ brings—joy transcending the many challenges we face in our daily lives.

The joy of Advent rests not the absence of hardship but the presence of hope.

How can we embrace the joy of Advent this week?

Practice Gratitude. Reflect on the ways God has been faithful in your life. Gratitude often opens the door to joy.

Choose Stillness. Take time to quiet your heart and meditate on the good news of Christ’s coming.

Share the Joy. Joy multiplies when we share it. A kind word, a helping hand, or a simple act of generosity can brighten someone’s day and point them to Jesus.

May we remember that the joy we have in Christ cannot be extinguished by circumstances. Let us rejoice in the promise of Emmanuel, God with us, who came to bring salvation and make our joy complete.

Rejoice, for the Lord is near!
