People Don’t Need Your Fixin’

People need your presence more than your problem-solving.

One of the most profound lessons I’ve learned in ministry is that people don’t always need you to fix their problems. Truthfully, more often than not, they simply need you to show up and be present. Whether they’re wrestling with grief, carrying the weight of life’s struggles, or navigating a season of uncertainty, your presence can be the greatest gift you offer.

We live in a world that values solutions and celebrates fixers. It’s tempting to jump into action, offering advice or strategies to make things better. But sometimes, in our rush to solve, we miss the deeper need: connection.

In the Gospel of John, when Mary and Martha lost their brother Lazarus, they were devastated. When Jesus arrived, He didn’t immediately explain or solve their grief. Instead, He wept with them (John 11:35). Jesus, the ultimate problem solver, chose presence over quick fixes. Why? Because He understood that love often speaks louder in silence and shared tears than in words or actions.

When someone is hurting, they’re not looking for a roadmap out of their pain. They’re looking for someone who will sit with them, acknowledge their feelings, and remind them they’re not alone. Being present is a sacred act that reflects God’s own presence in our lives. He doesn’t just fix our problems; He walks with us through them.

Next time you’re with someone who is struggling, resist the urge to jump in with advice. Instead, listen attentively. Listening says, “I see you, I hear you, and you matter.”

In a world that feels increasingly disconnected, your willingness to be present is a balm for weary souls. It’s a reflection of the God who promised never to leave us or forsake us.

Deuteronomy 31:6 NIV

Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.

So, the next time you encounter someone in need, remember: your presence may matter far more than your solutions.

Let’s be people who show up. Let’s be people who stay.

Who in your life needs you to be present right now? How can you make space to simply show up for them this week?

Grace and peace,
