Mental and Emotional Benefits of Walking

In a recent post, I shared how walking is currently my favorite and most fun form of exercise. Beyond the physical benefits, walking has become a kind of therapy—an emotional and mental reset that I desperately needed.

While some walks are peaceful and quiet, others can be prayer-filled with whispered worries and silent hopes. Sometimes, I walk just to breathe—to step away from persistent stress into stillness.

Walking helps untangle my anxious thoughts. It gives me space to reflect, process, and pray without pressure. Walking provides a gentle rhythm that reminds me I don’t have to rush. Everything isn’t a crisis. Some things aren’t as urgent as others make them to be. I am learning that I don’t have to have all the answers. I just have to keep moving—step by step—with God.

He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for His name’s sake.
Psalm 23:3 ESV

Walking restores my soul. It’s taking my heart and mind for a breath of fresh air. So when my thoughts feel heavy, or my emotions feel out of sync, I simply lace up my shoes and go for a walk. Not to escape, but to reconnect.
Not to outrun what I’m feeling, but to walk through it—with God beside me.

Thanks for reading my post. Please feel free to share your thoughts and insights in the comments.

Be salty, stay lit.

  1. Thanks so much, David! That’s a lot of steps—definitely some holy ground you’re covering each day! (See what I did there?) I simply love the idea of being intentional with that time, letting it become space for prayer and scripture to breathe fresh life into us as we navigate the battles of the day.

It’s amazing how even a few moments of pausing with God, even while moving, can shift the whole atmosphere of our hearts.

I am grateful we get to encourage each other along the way.
Blessings to you too, my friend! Hope you and Nancy had a wonderful weekend.

  2. I love it, brother! I walk on average about. 8,500 steps per day. Some school days I get in 12,000 – 14,000!

I need to be more conscious of what my heart and mind are mulling over during these transitions. Saying a prayer or reciting some favorite scriptures should be in order.

Thank you for the reminder to pause with God—even if I’m on the move.
    Blessings, my brother. 🙏❤️
