Don’t Be Who You Were. Be Who You Are.

At some point, we all have to decide:
Will we keep living from the memories of who we were or will we step into the truth of who we are?

It’s easy to get trapped by our past — past mistakes, past successes, and especially past versions of ourselves that no longer fit. It’s not always other people framing us in the prisms of the past; sometimes it’s us clinging to an outdated image of who we used to be. We’ve moved on externally but our inner mind is stuck in relitigating the prisons of the past.

Growth demands movement.
It demands honesty.
It demands courage.

You are not who you were.
You have changed — through pain, through joy, through lessons learned the hard way.
Your heart weathered storms, your soul stretched, your perspective deepened.

Still, the past tries to call you back, whispering, “Stay here in the familiar.”
If you continue answering yesterday’s voice, you risk never fully living today’s life.

Don’t be who you were. Be who you are.
It’s not about disowning your past but honoring it by refusing to stay stuck in it. Yesterday’s victories and failures don’t define you — they shape you, yes, but they shouldn’t imprison you.

You are not bound by your past.

Today, you are wiser.
Today, you are stronger.
Today, you are freer.

You are allowed to change.
You are allowed to outgrow old dreams, old attitudes, old fears.
You are allowed to rewrite your story starting right now.

Maybe the world around you still sees who you used to be — but you are responsible for living as who you are.
Even if others don’t understand, even if they resist, even if they try to pull you back into old patterns, you get to decide. You get to choose.

Will you remain a monument to the past or will you become a living, breathing testimony of transformation?

Today, choose to be who you are.
Fully. Freely. Unapologetically.

Be salty, stay lit.

  1. Dana-I’m glad this post hit the spot. Yes, it is challenging. I think society feeds on our discontent. Always wishing we were somewhere else than where we are and someone else than who we are. We are like restless nomads. Truth is, life is change. Thanks for reading and sharing your thoughts. Blessings.

  2. I’m just trying to live in the present, bro. But, I agree with your sentiment —the future’s so bright I gotta wear shades! Seriously tho’, David—I’m glad these words resonated with you and offered you a modicum of encouragement today. As always, I appreciate your comments. Hope you and Nancy are staying dry up in Oklahoma. Been a gullywasher week here in North Texas.

    Right on, my brother!

Moving forward, following God’s path for us, is not for the faint of heart.

Someone said to me the other day, “It is what it is, right David?” Despite not knowing what their “it” was, I could not agree. I answered, “It is what it’s going to be.”

A wise person once said, “Don’t look back, unless you intend to go that direction.”

    Here’s to the future, Bro!😎

    God Bless!
