One of my favorite verses, Joshua 1:9, is a powerful word that emphasizes courage and the presence of God.
Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.
Joshua 1:9 ESV
In this passage, God is speaking directly to Joshua as he is preparing to lead the Israelites into the Promised Land after the death of Moses.
There are several key themes reflected in this command directly from God:
- Divine Command: God asks a rhetorical question. The Lord is reinforcing His authority. God commanded Joshua to be strong and courageous. This would indicate that courage is not simply an option but a straight directive from God.
- Strength in Fear: The phrase “do not be frightened and, do not be dismayed” acknowledges the reality of fear and discouragement that often comes with leadership as new challenges arise. While recognizing Joshua’s feelings, God provides him with the assurance that he must not be overcome by them.
- God’s Presence: The promise that “the Lord your God is with you wherever you go” is a profound reminder of God’s constant presence. This assurance is foundational for courage and strength; knowing that God accompanies him provides the ultimate source of confidence for Joshua.
- Application for Today: I believe that this verse encourages believers today to stand firm in their faith and be courageous in the face of life’s challenges. It reassures us that we are not alone and that God’s support is unwavering.
As you think about this verse, consider how it applies to your own life. Are there areas where you need to be strong and courageous? Remember, like Joshua, you are never alone in your journey.
Thanks for reading!

Amen 🙏 Yes, God commanded Joshua twice before, in the same chapter. And He said something similar to Moses in Deuteronomy. So it’s something that would be familiar to Joshua. Thanks for reading and sharing your thoughts!

I had not thought of this before! “God asks a rhetorical question”, mind blowing and we had better pay attention when we get one of those from God.

Thats am excellent picture you paint, David. Reminds me of one of those famous Western paintings by Remington. It’s a great comfort that we can take confidence in the Lord. Appreciate your comments and thanks for reading my post.

Every time I read this verse I hear God saying to Joshua: “Remember, this is my rodeo, and it’s not the first one I’ve organized. So get out there, cowboy!”🤠
