A Modern Psalm of Lament

In his recent post on Time for Providence, fellow Christian blogger, Nathan Dooley, examined Psalm 74, a lament of hope calling on God with reverent boldness. In our online conversation, Nathan and I agreed that lament is actually worship.

I was inspired to pen a psalm of lament myself. Here it is:

A Modern Psalm of Lament

O Lord, God of the ages,
In the shadow of Your wings, we find our refuge,
Yet, around us, the storms of this world rage,
And the earth quakes with the drums of endless wars.

Hear our cry, O God of mercy,
For the lands are torn asunder,
Brother lifts hand against brother,
And peace seems but a distant memory.

The skies darken with the approach of another tempest,
A hurricane that threatens to swallow us whole,
O Sovereign Lord, who calms the raging seas,
Speak peace into this storm and grant us solace.

We mourn the decay of human hearts,
The love that grows cold, the spirits that harden,
Injustice spreads like a blight, and truth is traded for lies,
O Fountain of all goodness, restore us, and guide us back to Your light.

For we have wandered far from Your ways,
And in our arrogance, we have sown the wind,
Now, in trembling, we reap the whirlwind,
Forgive us, Lord, for our part in this brokenness.

“Turn us back to You, O Lord, and we will be restored; renew our days as of old” (Lamentations 5:21),
For in You alone do we find hope in the midst of despair,
Strength in our weakness, and peace in the eye of the storm.

O God, be our guide in these troubled times,
Lead us to be peacemakers in a world of strife,
To love mercy, act justly, and walk humbly with You,
For Your kingdom is a realm of peace, and in Your presence, wars cease.

We lay our lament at Your feet,
Trusting in Your unfailing love and infinite wisdom,
For You are the God who brings beauty from ashes,
And who promises a future where Your peace shall reign forevermore.

Amen.

My dear reader, as you ruminate and reflect on this modern psalm of lament, consider how you might be a shining light of God’s peace in your community. What is one step that you could take to sow seeds of peace and love in the midst of chaos?

Amidst the trials and tribulations, keep your focus on Jesus. He is faithful. He remains our firm foundation.

Know you are loved.

Remember: Put some Bible on it!

Praying you live well and love well.

Until my next post…

Be salty, stay lit.

  3. Thanks Nathan 🙏 God is good! I started writing my own modern psalms a few years ago and this one on lament has been brewing for a minute. Your post inspired me to finish it and share it. I’ve been thinking about putting these contemporary psalms in a book, alongside some of my artwork. Thanks for reading and sharing an encouraging word.
