You’ve heard me say, “Be salty, stay lit,” communicating my strong desire (and encouragement) to maintain a vibrant and influential presence for Christ and the Kingdom of God in our present world. While I don’t believe that I can take credit for creating this turn of phrase, it is one I adopted as a sign-off to my blogposts a while back. [Terri thought I’d coined it, but I don’t believe I did.]
The phrase “be salty and stay lit” combines two distinct idea with their own cultural and spiritual meanings. I believe that the phrase carries a rich, layered significance.
In the Bible, there are verses that speak about being “salt” and “light.”
13 “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.
14 “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house.16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.
Matthew 5:13-16 NIV
What does it mean to be “salty”?
Being salty means being impactful. It means we guard our integrity and keep our passion for goodness, making sure our life reflects the love and teachings of Christ.
- Living with integrity and purpose
- Making a positive impact in the world
- Holding fast to truth and values
What does it mean to “stay lit”?
Staying lit points to being full of life and purpose. We shine brightly by living out our faith authentically for others to witness, encouraging and inspiring them through our actions, not just our words. In whatever we do, may our actions reflect the light of God’s love that leads others to glorify Him.
- Keep shining spiritually
- Don’t hide your faith
- Keep your passion, energy, and joy alive
Be Salty, Stay Lit
Live a life of purpose and impact (“salty”) while shining brightly with joy, faith, and love (“lit”).
Being salty and staying lit demands we stay grounded in truth and remain vibrant in spirit. When we stay rooted in His Word we will undoubtedly “be salty” and “stay lit” in our life.

Know you are loved.
Until my next post…
Be salty, stay lit.
