Wednesday Wisdom | Self-Preservation

At first glance, given how much Scripture focuses on sacrifice and serving others, self-preservation may seem like an anti-biblical concept.

However, when we consider self-preservation from a biblical perspective, we quickly understand that our life is a precious gift from God. The Bible encourages us to value our lives while also instructing us on how to live righteously.

Proverbs 22:3 The Message

A prudent person sees trouble coming and ducks;
a simpleton walks in blindly and is clobbered.

Proverbs 22:3 highlights the importance of being wise and discerning, suggesting that taking steps for one’s safety and well-being is a form of wisdom.

Furthermore, in Matthew 4:7, Jesus teaches us the importance of not testing God.

Matthew 4:6-7 NIV

“If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down. For it is written:

“‘He will command his angels concerning you,
and they will lift you up in their hands,
so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.”

Jesus answered him, “It is also written: Do not put the Lord your God to the test.”

Again, this promotes the idea that while we trust in God, we are also called to act responsibly and wisely to protect our lives.

The Bible also clearly emphasizes that our lives and bodies belong to God.

1 Corinthians 6:19-20 ESV

Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.

1 Corinthians 6:19-20 teaches us that self-preservation is also about honoring God by taking care of the life He has entrusted to us.

Biblical wisdom encourages us to act prudently by caring for our physical and spiritual well-being as a way to honor God while trusting in His protection and providence.

As I’ve spent the past few months focusing on regaining my holistic wellbeing as I navigate a season of transition, I’ve grappled with my suddenly taking a time out. I am incredibly grateful for the support of my beloved wife, Terri. Her encouragement, along with God’s grace and kindness, has sustained me.
