This past week, I wrote about self-preservation. Today, I hope to put some more Bible on it.
Self-preservation is a fundamental aspect of human existence, and while the Bible may not speak directly about the concept in modern terms, it does provide guidance on how to value and care for oneself in the context of faith.

One of the key principles regarding self-preservation is recognizing the sanctity of life. In Genesis 1:27, the Word states, “So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.” Every single human being has inherent value. Life is precious and deserving of care and protection.
In the New Testament, Jesus teaches about the importance of one’s life. In Matthew 6:25-26, Jesus says, “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?” In this passage, Jesus reminds us that our lives are valuable in God’s eyes, and He takes care of our needs.

Sometimes self-preservation might seem at odds with serving others. Scripture encourages balance. Philippians 2:3-4 the Apostle Paul writes, “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.” The Apostle Paul urges us to focus on humility and consider the welfare of others while simultaneously recognizing our own needs and value. This can be a tricky path to navigate.
It’s important for us, as believers, to approach self-preservation through a lens of faith. We must trust in God’s provision and care for us while also being responsible for our own well-being. In challenging situations, we can be confident that God cares for us deeply and that it is okay to seek protection and care for ourself.
There are times we must be and times we must act, all the while keeping our eyes on Jesus.
Until my next post…
Be salty, stay lit.

If you don’t take care of yourself you can become unfit to care for others.
