After reading some of the prayers featured on my site, a fellow blogger encouraged me to explore the prayer of Jabez, found in 1 Chronicles 4:9-10. It’s a short, simple prayer tucked away in one of the least-read sections of the Bible—a genealogy—and yet it has stirred hearts and inspired believers worldwide.
In this prayer, Jabez acknowledges his struggles and pain, and he requests God’s blessings for an expanded territory, His presence, and protection from harm. The meaning behind this prayer reflects a heartfelt desire for a life that honors God while seeking His grace and mercy in overcoming past difficulties and living a fulfilling life. It showcases the importance of prayer as a means of communication with God and the belief that He hears and responds to our deepest needs.

It’s a prayer that encourages believers to approach God with confidence, knowing that He desires to bless and help us, transforming our challenges into opportunities for growth and faith.
The actual prayer reads:
Jabez was more honorable than his brothers; and his mother called his name Jabez, saying, “Because I bore him in pain.” Jabez called upon the God of Israel, saying, “Oh that you would bless me and enlarge my border, and that your hand might be with me, and that you would keep me from harm so that it might not bring me pain!” And God granted what he asked.
1 Chronicles 4:9-10 ESV
Who was Jabez?
Jabez was a man who sought God’s blessing and intervention in his life, demonstrating a deep reliance on God for protection, prosperity, and personal growth. He was an honorable man whose prayers God answered.
Ask Boldly, Live Faithfully
If you’ve spent time in church circles or wandered through any Christian book store over the last several years, you’ve probably heard of the Prayer of Jabez. It’s a short, simple prayer that has resonated with Christians throughout time.
At first glance, it’s astonishing that a simple two-verse mention in a long list of names has become such a spiritual landmark. But in Jabez’s prayer, we see the heart of a man who dared to ask God for something bigger.

Jabez Prayed for God’s Blessing
When Jabez says, “Oh, that you would bless me,” he isn’t asking for riches or comfort in the worldly sense even though God sometimes blesses in those ways. Jabez is asking for God’s best, for the fullness of what God intended for him to be and do.
There’s a valuable lesson here: It’s not selfish to ask God to bless you when your desire is to live fully for Him. In fact, to shrink back from His blessing can be a kind of false humility. God delights to pour out His goodness on those who seek Him.
Jabez Prayed for Enlarged Territory
“Enlarge my border” speaks directly to the opportunity, influence, and responsibility we have according to God’s will and plan. For an ancient Israelite, territory refers to land, security, and provision. Spiritually, it can also include the sphere of impact God gives us.
Praying this way says, “Lord, give me more room to serve You. Expand my reach so I can make a greater difference.” It’s a bold prayer that requires a willingness to step into whatever God gives us, even when it stretches us beyond our level of comfort.
Remember: there’s no safer place to be than in the center of God’s will.
Jabez Prayed for God’s Presence
“That your hand might be with me.” In the Bible, God’s hand symbolizes His power, guidance, and protection. Jabez knew that bigger blessings and greater influence also come with bigger, greater challenges. He didn’t want to walk into new places without God’s presence leading the way.
Remember: Success without God is ultimately hollow. Blessings become burdens if we try to carry them without Him.
Jabez Prayed for God’s Protection
“that you would keep me from harm so that it might not bring me pain!” We are quickly reminded that this is not the prayer of someone seeking a life without struggle. After all, Jabez’s name translates to “pain.” No, this is certainly the prayer of someone who has known hardship and is asking God to keep him from harm that would derail his calling.
We live in a world full of distractions, temptations, and spiritual dangers. It is wise and humble to ask God to guard our steps and preserve our integrity.
God Answered His Prayer
The final line is short but powerful: “And God granted his request.” It reminds us that our God is a God who hears and answers. He delights in bold prayers that spring from a sincere heart.

Living the Prayer of Jabez Today
Applying this prayer to our lives, it might look something like this:
- Blessing: Lord, let my life bear fruit for Your glory.
- Territory: Give me influence to share Your love with more people.
- Presence: Be with me every step so I don’t rely on my own strength.
- Protection: Guard my heart, my mind, and my witness.
The Prayer of Jabez is not a magic formula. The Bible isn’t a magic book. God isn’t a magician. He’s a miracle worker. Jabez invites us to pray courageously, to align our desires with God’s purposes, and to step into a life of faith-filled expectation.

Reflection Question:
What “territory” might God be calling you to step into if you dared to pray like Jabez?
Until my next post…

I have! I’m only on day 5, but it adjusts my thinking. It’s a great little book, only 96 pages, but he really gets the message out.

I recently found a book entitled “The Prayer of Jabez” by Bruce Wilkinson at the thrift store, and he encourages us to pray this same prayer every day, and see if it does not change our lives.
