Wednesday Wisdom | The Wisdom of Sobriety

Hi my friend! Welcome to this week’s installment of Wednesday Wisdom! I am glad you’re here. In yesterday’s post, I shared how I was, by the grace of God, celebrating being 30 years clean and sober. Today, I want to dig a little deeper into what the Bible offers us in the way of sober living.

The wisdom of sobriety is a theme that resonates throughout the Scriptures. The Bible speaks to the importance of living a life marked by sobriety and self-control, emphasizing the value of making wise choices that honor God.

Let‘s examine some examples together.

1 Peter 5:8 NIV

Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.

In this verse, the Apostle Peter, one of the original twelve disciples, highlights the importance of being alert and clear-headed, as the challenges of life and spiritual warfare constantly demand our full attention and discernment.

Proverbs 20:1 NIV

Wine is a mocker and beer a brawler;
    whoever is led astray by them is not wise.

The wisdom of Solomon offers us a stark reminder that indulging in substances that cloud our mind leads to foolishness and negative consequences. When asked if I want a drink, I often say “No thanks. I’m allergic. Alcohol makes me breakout in a rash of handcuffs.” Wisdom is about making prudent decisions that lead to a fulfilling and righteous life. We need to be clear-headed to practice wisdom.

Sobriety is not simply about abstaining from alcohol or substances. Living a sober life encompasses a broader sense of living with clarity and purpose. When we embrace sobriety, it creates room for the Fruit of the Spirit to flourish and abound in our lives. This doesn’t just impact us individually, but also those around us.

Galatians 5:22-23 NIV

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace,forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.

My friend, if you are seeking wisdom in your current journey of sobriety, I encourage you to spend time in prayer and meditation on these verses as you ask God for His strength and guidance. You are not alone in this pursuit; God is always ready to offer support and wisdom through His word.

Living a sober life is a commitment that involves more than just abstaining from substances; it is a way of life marked by self-control, clarity, and purpose. I encourage you to seek out a community of like-minded people who are willing to walk on this journey with you.

It works if you work it.

Until my next post…

Be salty, stay lit.
