When most of us think about diet, our minds immediately jump to food. We think about what we eat, what we should avoid, and how our choices impact our health. However today, I want to climb up on my Sunday Soapbox and ask you a deeper question:
What’s included in your spiritual diet?
If you’ve walked with Jesus any length of time, you know that just like our physical bodies need nourishment, our souls do too. The things we feed our minds and hearts have a profound effect on our spiritual health.

Junk Food for the Soul
We all know what junk food looks like in the physical sense: fast, processed, loaded with sugar or salt, giving us a temporary high but leaving us empty and sluggish. Spiritually, junk food looks much the same. You and I are readily consumed by doomscrolling negativity, engaging in the latest gossip, partaking shallow entertainment, or making unhealthy comparisons. While it may feel good in the moment, it lacks substance and can’t sustain us.
Soul Superfoods
On the flip side, there are spiritual superfoods. By God’s grace, you and I have access to practices and truths that bring lasting strength and energy.
- Time in God’s Word.
- Honest prayer.
- Fellowship with people who encourage you in faith.
- Worship that lifts your eyes above your circumstances.
- Quiet moments of stillness where you hear God’s whisper.
These are things that don’t just give us the equivalent of a spiritual sugar rush but actually nourish us at the core.
Friend, let me ask you:
Do Scripture, prayer, worship and healthy relationships make up your spiritual diet or are you just feeding yourself junk?
Balance Matters
You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to know that as with food, balance is key in our spiritual health. Too often, we rely on one type of spiritual intake and neglect the others. Maybe you’re good at serving others but rarely stop to rest with God. Or maybe you love to study the Bible but struggle with prayer. That comes with being human. The good news is that a well-rounded spiritual diet can keep us grounded, resilient, and ready for whatever life throws our way.

A Question for You
So, let me ask again: What’s included in your spiritual diet? Is your plate filled with quick bites of feel-good quotes and motivational soundbites, or are you making room for the rich, sustaining Word of God? Are you allowing room for silence and prayer, or are you spiritually snacking on the go?
Friend, our souls crave nourishment just as much as your body does. Feed it well, and we will find ourselves stronger, healthier, and more at peace.
Sunday Soapbox takeaway:
Let us be intentional with what we consume spiritually this week.
What we feed grows.

Until my next post…
Be salty, stay lit.

I’m glad the tenderness of my words came through as it’s a post meant to encourage us (myself included) to be more intentional about what we feed our souls. Thanks for reading, taking time to think, and responding to this post, Jodi.

This is a very tender – and thought provoking post!
“Are you allowing room for silence and prayer, or are you spiritually snacking on the go?”
⬆️ That question … things that make ya say “hmmmm”?
