During my healing journey, I’ve found that letting go of physical clutter often mirrors the work of what it looks like to release emotional weight.
Last week, I faced one of the bigger tasks on my want-to-do list: Emptying our off-site storage unit. When we first rented it, the monthly cost was less than a hundred dollars. Over time, the cost had nearly doubled, and without a steady income, it was an obvious place to cut back. Plus, it seems like a good time to declutter. If not now, when?

Cleaning out our storage is about more than saving money. Doing so felt like I was reclaiming much needed space in my life. It is about making room for peace, for healing, and for what truly matters. Decluttering is a matter of making choices: what to keep, what to give away, what to recycle, and what to throw away.
Clutter is not only about the piles on our desks or the boxes in our garages. It’s also about the burdens we carry inside like unforgiveness, regret, shame, and fear.
Too many possessions will choke the peace out of a room. Similarly, the clutter of the soul can crowd out God’s presence in our lives.
When our hearts are cluttered, it’s harder to hear His still, small voice. We may feel hurried, distracted, and weighed down, unable to notice the Spirit’s gentle nudges.
Jesus told His followers not to store up treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy (Matthew 6:19–21). Clutter keeps us tethered to the temporary and blinds us to the eternal.
Matthew 6:19-21 ESV
Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

Clutter weighs us down. Now that our storage unit is empty my soul feels a little lighter.
My friend, what’s standing in the way of your peace, happiness, and growing relationship with God?
Until my next post…
Be salty, stay lit.

Amen. Blessings and our Savior’s grace be with you, Rainer. The Lord’s grace always stands ready to help us declutter the negative stuff in our life’s journey. Colleen and I went through a similar process when we finally emptied our own small storage unit, which contained several treasures from her family home in Maryland.
