When life slows us down—when grief, trauma, or exhaustion hit—it can be easy to feel like we’ve lost our way. We examen our calling and look at the work we believe God has given us and ask: Did I somehow get off course?
Friend, over these last few months, I’ve been reminded of the profound truth that healing isn’t a detour. It’s not simply a pause or a delay that keeps us from moving forward. Healing is an integral part of our journey.
We live in a world obsessed with making forward progress. We work hard to get somewhere only to forget about being there. We rush through the process of healing, moving forward before we’re ready. We decide that we are ready enough.

When Jesus healed the sick, He didn’t see it as a distraction from His mission. Healing was His mission. Our restoration works in the same way. Every moment spent tending to our wounds, every hour of rest and reflection, is shaping us into the person God has called us to be. Healing is part of our calling.
Our calling isn’t only about what we do. It’s about who we are becoming in the process. Sometimes, my friend, our becoming requires stillness, not action. Sometimes our journey needs us to tend to the broken places instead of pushing forward with plans and projects. Life isn’t always just about onward and upward.
If you find yourself in a season of recovery, like I have, whether from grief, trauma, or burnout, please listen: You are not off track. You haven’t fallen away. You are not “less than.” You are not missing your calling. God still loves you. He’s not angry with you or disappointed with you. You haven’t let God down. You are walking your calling, quietly and faithfully, even when it doesn’t feel like you’re producing any fruit. You ARE enough.

God did not rescue me out of the pain, He rescued me through the pain!
Healing is not wasted time. It’s totally necessary to fulfill the calling God has placed on your life. Recovery is the work of God in you, preparing you to step into your calling with more depth, empathy, and wisdom than ever before. The truth is we are ALL healing from something.
So, my friend, rest. Heal. Receive this season as sacred. Trust that God is at work in the waiting. Healing isn’t a detour. It’s the road itself.
Psalm 147:3 NLT
He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.
My Prayer:
Dear Lord, teach me to see my healing as part of my calling. Help me to rest in You, to trust Your work in the quiet, and to be shaped by Your Spirit for the path You’ve set before me. In the precious and powerful name of Jesus. Amen.

Until my next post…
Be salty, stay lit.

Hemingway is one of my favorite writers. I once wanted to be a writer like him back in the day, but have yet to publish a book. I love what you’ve shared here in your comment, David. Me,too. But God, Only God. I pray you and Nancy have a super Sunday as well. 🙏

During the “rock bottom” parts of my life, I felt broken to the core—like I could never go back to the way things were. Praise God, it wasn’t true. With His help, I’ve been able to start over (basically from scratch) three times in my life.
One of my favorite Hemingway quotes rings true: “The world breaks everyone and afterward many are strong at the broken places.”
Blessings, my brother. I pray you and Terri have a blessed Sunday.
