Wednesday Wisdom | Fortune Favors the Bold

The old proverb “Fortune favors the bold” has echoed through my mind lately as it has thundered through the centuries. At its heart, this word of wisdom reminds us that opportunity rarely rewards those who hesitate. Boldness, whether in faith, creativity, or relationships, often unlocks doors that caution keeps closed.

This past spring, I experienced this truth in the most unexpected place: a friendly football pick ’em league with a group of friends. No money was involved, just pride and bragging rights. We like to razz one another and Lord knows we like to brag amongst ourselves. Heading into the final week, I was tied with two other pickers for first place.

I could have played it safe by choosing the same team they did, thereby guarantying me at least a share of the title. But something in me said, take the other team. It was a risk. If I was wrong, I’d lose outright. If I was right, I’d win it all. I would be crowned the Spring King.

I picked differently. And I won.

It was a small thing, but it reminded me of a big truth: fortune favors the bold.

2 Timothy 1:7 NLT

For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline.

Boldness makes the difference. In Scripture we see people who stepped out in boldness:

  • Abraham leaving his homeland
  • Esther approaching the king
  • Peter stepping onto the water

None of them had certainty, yet all of them had faith.

Boldness doesn’t equal recklessness. It doesn’t mean ignoring wisdom. Acting boldly means trusting that God can do more with our courage than we can do with our fear. Sometimes it’s choosing a different path. Sometimes it’s speaking up when silence feels safer. Sometimes it’s saying yes to the unknown.

If we wait until conditions are perfect, we will never act. Fortune—the blessings of opportunity, growth, and divine favor—comes to those who are willing to trust God enough to step forward. It favors those who are willing to say yes.

A Prayer for Boldness

Precious Lord, give me the courage to step out in faith today. Quiet my fears, strengthen my resolve, and help me trust that You go before me. May my boldness bring You glory and open doors for Your goodness to flow. In the mighty, powerful name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.
