Welcome to another installment of my blog‘s Bible Study Sunday. The Bible plays a crucial role in creating posts for The Devotional Guy™. As Christians living in a “Just Do It” world, it is challenging to live an “it is finished” life. Being grounded in God’s Word is fundamental to imitating Christ in a time and place desperately needing us to point to Jesus as the source of hope and love.
2 Timothy 3:16-17 NLT
All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work.

How Do We Study the Bible?
Start with Prayer. When we open our Bibles, let us ask God to help us understand what His Word says to us and that it would be a time spent letting God’s Word enter into us, transforming our heart, mind, and soul.
All in One Chunk. Try and read the entire passage all the way through first. Read it aloud if that helps you process and comprehend it more fully.
Work it. The second time around highlight repeated words and/or phrases. Notice transition words like “therefore,” “yet,” and “so then/that”.
Remember that God’s Word is written for us, not to us. Knowing the context and the audience the author was writing to originally matters and helps us understand the Bible better.
Ask Questions. After you’ve read a passage a few times, ask observation, interpretation, and application questions. What? So What? Now What?

Why Do We Study the Bible?
Studying the Bible is a vital practice for us as professed Believers and it serves several important purposes. First and foremost, it is through the Scriptures that we come to know God and His character more deeply. As Psalm 119:105 states, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” The Bible provides guidance and direction in a world that can often feel dark and confusing.
Additionally, studying the Bible strengthens our faith and helps us grow in our relationship with the Lord. The Word of God equips us not only for our spiritual journey but also for the challenges we face in life.
Scripture offers us wisdom and understanding for living a life that honors God. By immersing ourselves in God’s Word, we receive insights that help us navigate our relationships, decisions, and moral dilemmas.
In essence, studying the Bible transforms us, builds us up, and connects us with God and one another. Bible study is a journey of love and discovery that impacts every aspect of our lives as Christians.
My friend, I would also like to encourage you to read Scripture out loud as well as listening to it read aloud. American pastor Eugene Peterson emphasized recovering the atmosphere of spokenness by reading the Bible aloud and listening to its sounds and rhythms. I believe there’s something special about God’s Word being spoken.
Unsure about where to start reading your Bible? Start here:
I hope and pray that you will join me in committing to studying the Bible. It is how God communicates Himself to us. The more we know our Bible the better and more deeply we know God.

Until my next post…
Be salty, stay lit.
