Bible Study Sunday | Matthew

Good morning friends! Today, we continue our journey in the Gospel of Matthew, written by the Apostle Matthew, one of the original Twelve, around A.D. 50-65, roughly twenty to thirty years after Christ’s death and resurrection.

Last Sunday, we looked at how Chapter 1 starts off by providing a fascinating genealogy of Jesus Christ, tracing His lineage through Joseph, highlighting His descent from Abraham and David, emphasizing that Jesus is the long-awaited fulfillment of numerous Old Testament prophecies about the Messiah.

Chapter 1 continues by narrating the well known Christmas Story—the miraculous conception of Jesus. In this periscope we find Matthew explaining how Mary, a virgin engaged to Joseph, became pregnant through the Holy Spirit. Joseph, initially troubled by this news, was visited by an angel in a dream who reassured him, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.” The angel instructed Joseph to name the child Jesus, for He would save His people from their sins.

The chapter concludes by affirming that all this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken through the prophet: “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel,” which means “God with us.” Joseph obeyed the angel’s command and took Mary as his wife, raising Jesus as his own.

The faith of both Mary and Joseph that we see demonstrated in this chapter is incredible and a tremendous example of what faithfulness looks like when it is truly lived out. Can you imagine being in Joseph’s shoes during that time period? The beautiful, innocent faith of Mary is almost beyond words.

This foundational chapter sets the tone for the story of Jesus’ life, emphasizing His divine origin and purpose.

I hope you’re enjoying this exploration of the Gospel of Matthew. The Gospels help us understand Jesus better.

Until my next post…

Be salty, stay lit.
