The Decluttering Chronicles | First Pericope

I’ve spent time going through boxes that have been temporarily staged in our garage. Many of the boxes contain books. While my plan is to take many of them to our local book resale shop (Half Price Books), I’m also finding several treasures and keepers.

I’m not rushing through this process, but trying to be intentional. There are a lot of memories, dreams, and even a few stories wrapped up in these boxes.

The goal of decluttering is something I set when I started my sabbatical. When God tells you to sit down, you sit down. Recognizing He did it, not to punish me, but to help me, I continue to press on through my healing journey.

Admittedly, I’ve struggled with this unexpected time out. I’ve filled my calendar with distractions, I’ve explored job opportunities, and I’ve wrestled with identity. At sixty, I find myself living in an awkward space without a lot of answers. Who am I? Who does God say I am? Who does Terri need me to be? Will I be okay?

As I am decluttering physical objects, I’m also decluttering my soul.

Matthew 6:19-21 NIV

Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal.

But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.

For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

Until my next post…

Be salty, stay lit.

  1. It was interesting to be transported back in time three decades and remembering who I was and how I was those early days into my sobriety. Thanks for the encouragement. Definitely all only by God’s grace.

  2. Wow. That’s quite a bit. I bet you both felt relieved afterwards, though? Yeah, finding it is crazy but in a good way. Good hearing from you, brother. Hope you’ve had a restful Fall Break.

  3. When we remodeled our house, Nancy and I took three minivan loads of stuff to Goodwill. It was twenty years of clutter. It’s amazing that you still have your AA book. Congrats on 30 years sober.

  4. Yes, it’s very similar. In this case, Terri and I believe we are where we’ll be until they wheel us out, so it’s a matter of simplifying and minimizing what we need and don’t need. But, yes, some things are harder to let go of than others. Thanks for sharing your insights!

  5. This is like the process of sorting while moving. I have given lots away and some things are a bit hard to let go of.
