Wednesday Wisdom | Being Still in Uncertain Times

The past few weeks I’ve heard several people express how they find it difficult to be still. Being still in our overly busy and always on-the-go world is definitely challenging, but it’s also biblical.

The concept of being still is found in Scripture and it typically relates to a position of calmness, trust, and surrender in the presence of God.

Psalm 46:10 NIV

He says, “Be still, and know that I am God;
I will be exalted among the nations,
I will be exalted in the earth.”

To be still means to quiet our minds and hearts to the noise and from the distractions of life, allowing ourselves to recognize God’s sovereignty and presence. It also describes a time of contemplation, prayer, and reflection, where we acknowledge that God is in control and can provide peace amidst chaos.

In times of uncertainty (or stress), being still serves as an invitation to trust in God’s plan, reminding us that we do not have to rely on our own understanding or strength. Nobody is asking us to have all the answers. Being still is a radical call to embrace our faith with confidence while recognizing that through practicing stillness we are able to encounter God in profound ways. Remember, when we are seeking peace in tumultuous times, God invites us to come to Him and find rest.

Being still is a transformative experience that fosters a deeper relationship with God.

Here are some biblical suggestions that can help you cultivate stillness:

Make Time for Prayer

Prayer doesn’t simply happen on its own. We must be intentional about it by it carving out time for it. Focus on seeking God, listening, and allowing His peace to wash over you. Prayer is as much, if not more, about listening as it is talking.

Read Your Bible

Find a passage of the Bible that speaks to you. Chew on it. Really think about what it is saying and to who. How can you apply it to your life? Take time to reflect on God’s Word, allowing it to fill your mind and heart.

Practice Mindfulness in Nature

Spend time in nature, as God’s creation is a source of serenity. Go for a walk or sit in a park. Spending time outside makes it clear that there is indeed a God.

Reduce Distractions

In a busy world, it can be helpful to turn off devices and eliminate noise. Consider setting specific times where you intentionally disconnect from social media and other distractions to focus on God and enjoy some quiet moments.

Participate in Worship

Worship is a beautiful avenue to experiencing stillness. Singing, playing an instrument, or simply listening to worship music calms the soul and leads us to a place of stillness.

Reflect on God

Journaling your thoughts and feelings is also a means to finding clarity. Write down your prayers, worries, and praises as a means of releasing them into God’s trustworthy hands.

Integrating these practices into our daily life helps us grow a habit of stillness that deepens our faith and allows us to experience God’s presence more profoundly.

Until my next post…

Be salty, stay lit.
