Bible Study Sunday | Responding to Jesus

Hi friends! Welcome to our Bible Study Sunday feature. Today, we continue our journey through the Gospel of Matthew.

Matthew 8:18-34 shares a number of significant events in the ministry of Jesus Christ, highlighting His authority, compassion, and the discipleship process.

Let’s break down this passage:

The Cost of Discipleship

Matthew 8:18-22

In verses 18-20, we see Jesus addressing a scribe who wants to follow Him. Jesus responds, “Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.” This teaches us that following Jesus often comes with sacrifice and a lack of worldly comfort. Another disciple asks to bury his father first, to which Jesus replies, “Follow me, and let the dead bury their own dead.” While it may seem harsh, this indicates the urgent call to discipleship and the necessity of prioritizing our spiritual commitments over more traditional obligations.

Calming the Storm

Matthew 8:23-27

The narrative shifts as Jesus and His disciples get into a boat. A violent storm arises, and the disciples are terrified. Jesus is sleeping. Frightened, they wake Him, saying, “Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!” Jesus responds, “You of little faith, why are you so afraid?” and calms the storm with a command. This story emphasizes Christ’s divine authority over nature and the importance of faith in times of fear and uncertainty.

Healing the Gadarene Demoniacs

Matthew 8:28-34

As they finally reach the other side, things continue to get interesting. Jesus encounters two demon-possessed men. The demons recognize Jesus’ authority and plea not to be tortured before the appointed time. They request to be sent into a herd of pigs, which Jesus permits. The pigs rush into the water and drown. The local people, fearing the power of Jesus, ask Him to leave their region. This passage reveals His authority over the spiritual realm and shows how His presence can provoke both fear and admiration.

Themes and Applications

  • Discipleship: Following Jesus is a call to commitment, often requiring us to forsake comfort and put God’s mission first in our lives.
  • Faith in Trials: We know that just as the disciples faced a storm, we will encounter difficult situations. Jesus encourages us to have faith that He is with us and can calm our storms.
  • Authority of Christ: The calming of the storm and the healing of the demoniacs demonstrate Jesus’ authority over both physical and spiritual realms. We are invited to trust in His power and sovereignty.
  • Response to Jesus: The fear displayed by the townspeople after witnessing His miracle highlights an important truth about how people respond to the Divine. While some folks may choose to embrace Him, others may fearfully reject Him.

As we study these verses, let us reflect on our commitment to follow Christ, our faith in difficult times, and how we respond to His authority in our lives. Let us choose faith over fear. May we be encouraged to trust Him more fully in every circumstance we face.

Until my next post…

  3. Thank you, Lilu. Yes, the line between faith and fear is thin at times. I think that’s especially true when the stakes are high or our doubts run deep. I’m grateful for your kind words. Blessings.

Powerful reflection, beautifully tying together discipleship, faith in the storm, and Christ’s authority. The tension between fear and trust is so real — your words make it hit home. Really inspiring.
