When I first started writing online back in 2008, I thought being a Christian blogger was simply about sharing devotionals or Bible verses. In those days, I published posts on a now defunct platform under the name Joshua’s Hope. Since launching The Devotional Guy™ in 2013, I’ve come to know that Christian blogging is far richer than I ever imagined. It’s become a way to meet people where they are, and encourage, teach, and even challenge them in their faith.
In my journey as a Christian blogger, I’ve learned that every voice matters. Whether we’re sharing a personal story, offering guidance, or expressing faith through art, there’s a way for each of us to serve God, glorify Him, and bless others online.
Here’s a look at 10 types of Christian bloggers, each with a unique way of impacting the digital world.
1. The Devotional & Scripture Reflection Blogger
These are the digital pastors and encouragers of the internet. They are the ones who turn God’s Word into bite-sized reflections that meet readers where they are. Their posts often end with prayer, reflection, and hope.
2. The Testimony & Faith Journey Blogger
These storytellers open their hearts and share where they’ve been, wherever they’ve been; through addiction, loss, healing, and grace. They show what redemption looks like in real time.
3. The Christian Living & Lifestyle Blogger
They blend faith and everyday life, covering topics like family, work, health, finances, and purpose. They write from their kitchens, local coffee shops, and their daily routines as well as anywhere else faith meets real life.
4. The Theology & Apologetics Blogger
These are the thinkers. They are the ones who love digging into doctrine, history, and the “why” behind what we believe. Their posts build understanding and deepen conviction.
5. The Encouragement & Inspiration Blogger
Their gift is gentleness. Their words land softly but carry deep truth.
They write like friends walking with you through life’s storms.
6. The Social Justice & Advocacy Blogger
These bloggers bridge faith and action. They write about compassion, community, and standing with those society overlooks. Their blogs echo the heartbeat of the Gospel in motion.
7. The Ministry & Leadership Blogger
Often pastors, chaplains, or mentors, they write for others who serve, equipping and encouraging them for ministry. Their posts blend wisdom with practical application.
8. The Creative & Artistic Faith Blogger
These bloggers are the artists, poets, photographers, and musicians who see God in color, texture, and form. Their art preaches without words through offering creativity as worship.
9. The Mental Health & Wellness Blogger
They write courageously about the intersection of faith, healing, and mental health. Their honesty offers both comfort and courage.
10. The Spiritual Growth & Discipleship Blogger
They focus on spiritual formation: teaching about prayer, discernment, obedience, and intimacy with God.
Their blogs are like trail guides for the Christian journey.
The truth is, many Christian bloggers overlap these genres. Some bloggers wear several hats at once. Storyteller, encourager, artist, advocate and whatever else the Lord lays on their heart. That’s a good thing. The Kingdom needs all our voices.
So whether you write devotionals, share your personal story, explore theology, or paint your faith in color, I say keep going.
Your words matter.
Your story matters.
And God can use both.

Makes sense. Blogs, like our writing, grow and evolve over time. Sharing your current life experiences of a believer walking out his faith in a contentious post-pandemic world is a great niche to be in nowadays, IMHO. I look forward to reading your blog. When I started, it was about sharing experiences for those who felt they weren’t good enough. That is still the goal, but it has gone from verses, praise, comparing bibles, historical, and even a few recipes. The recipes are so I wouldn’t forget them. Current life experiences for me and those around me are what God has given me to share ideas and content.

Thanks. I have been doing this since 2013 and I needed to hear this, I am all over the place. I listen to what God tells me, but sometimes it makes me feel like, for lack of a better term, chaotic. 🙃

What I appreciate is listening to what others share. I might not agree with all. What rings true for me helps me broaden my sense of the fullness of life and feeding into my purpose.
A significant insight was an encouragement from a fellow Christian with a degenerative disease who commented on my acquired disability …. living a repurposed life because God is not finished with me.
We grow by “feeding” each other as children of God.

Jasper, having visited your blog and checked it out, I agree you have some great variety. And I think that’s cool. I like the title. Based on your content, you’re definitely blogging about your journey with God. I see you wrote some poetry and even some fiction. That’s fantastic! Compassion and stewardship are excellent pillars of faith to build on. Most importantly, are you happy with your blog and the content you create? Is it glorifying God the way you intended? For what it’s worth, I don’t know that my blog fits neatly into one box, nor do I necessarily want it to. I do want readers and followers to trust me so I try to be faithful and consistent with the content I create for my blog. I don’t want my readers to wake up one day and wonder when I became a sports blogger or political commentator, for example. My blogging doesn’t fit neatly into any of the categories. The sub-title of my blog is Nurturing Compassion and Stewardship.
For several years fellow readers did not know what to make of Living In God’s Pocket as the name of my blog. The tile comes from listening to a Canadian folk singer Del Barber and I use it with his permission.

I feel like I’m a mixture of #2 and #9. I’m a Christian struggling with mental illness and I try to encourage those who are suffering as well.

The goal is to write what God tells me to write, when He tells me to write it.
I don’t always hit the mark but the blog and its writer are a work in progress.

When I was researching this topic, Bridget, I was surprised at how many niches were encapsulated under the Christian blog umbrella. I narrowed it down to ten that I see evidenced in the blogs I follow. Naturally, there is overlap within what people do.
Writers are readers first (I’ve heard it said). And bloggers ARE writers.
I find that the term “Christian Blogger” helps me stay focused.

Wow, I didn’t realize there were numerous types of Christian bloggers. But when you break it down like that, it does make sense. I always loved reading, and that’s where my love of writing stemmed from. I really hadn’t even thought to call myself a “Christian Blogger” until you mentioned that on your blog. Good post and interesting, hadn’t thought about the type. Started the blog reluctantly as I knew it was a necessary, if I wanted to get back to writing in today’s world. What started out as a few devotional posts and platform building, grew into this is what’s on the heart, where and how He seems to be leading so sit back and write what He brings. Just following and listening for the nudges and whispers. And will see where He takes it. Kind of had to take my hands off the wheel. ~ Rosie
