Friends, welcome to our Simple Bible Plan study. We continue this week in the Gospel of Mark. I think Mark 9 is a rich chapter encompassing several pivotal events in the earthly ministry of Jesus. The chapter showcases His glory, teachings, and the nature of true discipleship.
The Transfiguration (Mark 9:1-13)
The chapter begins with Jesus telling His disciples that some of them will not taste death before they see the Kingdom of God come with power (v. 1). This is fulfilled in the transfiguration. Jesus takes Peter, James, and John up a high mountain, where He is transfigured before them. His clothes become dazzling white, and Moses and Elijah appear, speaking with Him. This revelation emphasizes Jesus’ divine identity and glory. God’s voice affirms, “This is my Son, whom I love. Listen to him!” (v. 7). The transfiguration reassures the disciples of Jesus’ authority and fulfills the prophetic heritage of Moses and Elijah.
Discussing Elijah’s Coming (Mark 9:11-13)
After the transfiguration, the disciples question Jesus about the return of Elijah, as prophesied in Malachi 4:5. Jesus explains that Elijah has already come in the person of John the Baptist, who suffered and was rejected. This emphasizes the continuity of God’s plan and highlights the challenges faced by those who stand for righteousness.
Healing a Boy with an Unclean Spirit (Mark 9:14-29)
Descending from the mountain, Jesus encounters a large crowd and a desperate father whose son is possessed by a spirit that robs him of speech. The boy suffers greatly, and the father pleads for help, expressing doubt about the disciples’ ability to heal him. Jesus responds, “If you can? Everything is possible for one who believes” (v. 23). The father cries out, “I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!” (v. 24). This interaction highlights the tension between faith and doubt. Jesus ultimately frees the boy, teaching the disciples that some demons can only be driven out through prayer.
The Second Prediction of Jesus’ Death (Mark 9:30-32)
Jesus teaches His disciples about His impending suffering, death, and resurrection. He makes it clear that He will be betrayed and killed, but rise again after three days. The disciples do not understand His words, showcasing their difficulty in grasping the nature of His mission.
Who Is the Greatest? (Mark 9:33-37)
After a journey, the disciples engage in a dispute about who among them is the greatest. Jesus teaches a powerful lesson on humility by placing a child among them and saying, “Whoever welcomes one of these little children in my name welcomes me” (v. 37). This emphasizes the value of humility, servanthood, and the importance of caring for the vulnerable.
Warning Against Sidetracks (Mark 9:38-50)
John informs Jesus that they saw someone driving out demons in His name and tried to stop him because he was not one of them. Jesus responds, “Do not stop him… for whoever is not against us is for us” (v. 39). He goes on to warn against leading others into sin and emphasizes the seriousness of sin by using hyperbolic language about cutting off hands or feet and tearing out eyes (v. 43-48). This conveys the importance of maintaining purity and accountability in the community of believers.

As we wrap things up for this week, we can see that Mark 9 reveals the majesty of Jesus, the challenges His followers experienced to embrace humility and faith, and the seriousness of sin. This chapter invites us to listen to Jesus, recognize His authority, and follow Him wholeheartedly.
Reflection Questions
- Where am I being invited to listen rather than explain or control?
- What does my honest prayer sound like right now, especially where belief and unbelief coexist?
- How is Jesus redefining greatness, power, and faith in my life?

Until my next post…
Be salty, stay lit.
