As we continue working our way through Part One of the Simple Bible Reading Plan, we arrive at Luke 15.
Luke 15 is a beautiful chapter in the New Testament that contains three profound parables told by Jesus, illustrating God’s love and forgiveness. These stories are about the lost and emphasize the joy of redemption.
The Parable of the Lost Sheep (Luke 15:1-7)
In this parable, Jesus tells of a shepherd who leaves his ninety-nine sheep to go after one that is lost. When he finds it, he joyfully puts it on his shoulders and returns home, calling his friends and neighbors to rejoice with him. This illustrates God’s relentless pursuit of each individual, showing that every person is precious in His sight. As it says in verse 7, “I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent.”
The Parable of the Lost Coin (Luke 15:8-10)
Here, a woman has ten silver coins but loses one. She lights a lamp, sweeps the house, and searches carefully until she finds it. Upon finding it, she calls her friends and neighbors to rejoice with her. In this parable, the joy of finding the lost reflects God’s joy when a sinner repents. As stated in verse 10, “In the same way I tell you, there is rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God over one.
The Parable of the Prodigal Son (Luke 15:11-32)
This is perhaps the most well-known of the parables. A younger son asks his father for his share of the inheritance and leaves home to live a reckless life. Eventually, he finds himself in desperate need and decides to return to his father, who welcomes him back with open arms, demonstrating forgiveness and restoration. The older brother, who stayed loyal, struggles with feelings of resentment. This parable emphasizes themes of grace, repentance, and the unwavering love of the Father.

Each of these parables highlights the theme of lostness and the great lengths to which God will go to restore a relationship with His creation. They speak to the heart of redemption and the profound joy that accompanies reconciliation.
As you study Luke 15, reflect on how these parables relate to your life. God’s desire for relationship and His willingness to forgive and restore can encourage anyone facing challenges, including feelings of lost identity or confidence. Draw strength from these truths as you navigate your journey forward.

There has been time when we as humans stray away from our Heavenly Father and when we do return he always welcome us with open arms.
