Wednesday Wisdom | A Lenten Rule of Life

A #Lent26 Reflection

Friends, followers, and readers, Lent begins today. I’m inviting you to join me in a blogging collaboration focusing on Lent.

What is Lent?

Lent is not explicitly detailed in the Bible, but it traditionally has its origins in the early Christian church as a time of reflection, fasting, and preparation for Easter, commemorating the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Forty Days of Hunger, Silence, and Surrender

This Lent, I am not aiming at spectacle.
I am aiming at formation.

I will fast from one meal each day, not to prove discipline, but to remind my body that it is not in charge.

When hunger rises, I will not rush to silence it. I will let it speak. I respond with prayer.

As my body longs for food, may my soul long for God.

I will fast from noise.

I will not seek to fill every quiet space with input, commentary, or distraction.
I will protect stillness, especially in the morning. I will allow silence to expose what noise has been covering.

If restlessness surfaces, I will not numb it. I will sit with it.

I will fast from self-explanation.

I will resist the impulse to clarify every misunderstanding, to defend my every intention or to rehearse conversations in my head.

I will entrust my reputation to God.
He will not abandon the work of His hands.

Each day I will ask:

  • Where did I feel hunger?
  • Where did I feel exposed?
  • Where did I feel free?

This Lent, I am not trying to become impressive. I am learning to surrender.

Let my hunger deepen me.
Let my silence sharpen me.
Let my restraint soften me.

And when Easter comes,
may I be lighter, not because I gave things up, but because I laid them down.

Absolutely beautiful! I’m giving up my late night snacks for time with God with a few other things so this quote from you is encouraging me this morning ‘I will fast from one meal each day, not to prove discipline, but to remind my body that it is not in charge.’ Thank you, friend!
