Much of my life has been lived under evaluation.
Grades. Assessments. Approval. Silence. Disapproval. Opinions of others. Raised eyebrows of judgement.
It’s natural for me to perform.
As a kid, I sought to entertain. It provided solace for me, somehow, someway.
Sing. Recite. Play an instrument. Give a speech. Impersonate Elvis. Do magic tricks.
Over time, things changed. Performance became a shield.
Not dramatically. Subtly, sometimes. Over explaining. Justifying my “no.” Softening my edges to make others comfortable.
I protected myself. I showed you who I wanted you to see.
But wisdom says, I don’t have to manage everyone’s perception of me.
Every boundary isn’t a paragraph. I don’t have to scramble to fix some sort of misunderstanding. It’s alright if you don’t get it. It’s okay if you don’t get me.
My “no” stands.
I let silence do its work.
I don’t have to expend energy correcting someone’s misinterpretation of me.
I can just be me, without explanation.
It’s not indifference.
It’s a gift, a blessing, that comes with maturity.
My identity is no longer anchored to applause.
For me, it’s a hard-won hallelujah.
I’ve spent a lifetime being evaluated — probably much like you. And honestly, we learn to evaluate ourselves through the lens of other people’s opinions.
They’re just opinions.
A deeper freedom is available.
Who do I want to be while I’m still here?
Not, “How do I keep proving myself?”
Not, “How do I secure my place?”
Simply:
What is true?
What is mine to carry?
What can I release?
Friend—You don’t owe the world a performance. You owe yourself integrity.
Be true to who you are.
That’s what matters.

Until my next post…
Be salty, stay lit.

When our identity is rooted in who God says we are, not in opinions, we rest. We stop performing. We start living with integrity instead of insecurity.
Be Blessed and Continue to be a Blessing…

Rainer, I appreciate these reflections of encouragement. For me, retirement has opened other avenues to embrace . . . more time to immerse myself in God’s Word, writing (I never imagined such a journey), meeting new friends and acquaintances, and taking in each day’s grace.
