Matthew 13:44–46
There are moments in life when something suddenly shifts. We catch a glimpse of something so real and so valuable that everything else begins to lose its weight.
44 “The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field.
45 “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant looking for fine pearls. 46 When he found one of great value, he went away and sold everything he had and bought it.
Matthew 13:44-46 NIV
Jesus speaks to such a moment in these two short parables featuring two different people offering one shared response.
They gave up everything to possess what they found.
The Discovery
In the first parable, a man stumbles upon treasure that he wasn’t searching for. He wasn’t digging with intention. He just came across it.
The second man is different. He’s a merchant who is actively searching and intentionally on the lookout for something of value. And when he finds the pearl, he recognizes it immediately.
One man found truth unexpectedly.
The other one found it after a long search. Both recognized what they found when they saw it.
Clarity
Clarity leads to honesty.
Neither man negotiates nor hesitates.
Neither of the men tries to hold onto what they already have and gain the treasure.
Both men see clearly and their clarity strips away illusion. What they once deemed valuable is suddenly of no value at all.
Cost
The one man sold everything he had out of joy stemming from what he’d found.
Honestly, we like to soften this part. We love to talk about blessing and winning, yet we are reluctant to talk about the cost. Both men gave up everything with joy because they saw what was of real, true, and eternal value.
That kind of cost doesn’t feel like loss as much as it becomes an exchange for something priceless and invaluable.
The Question Beneath the Parable
Jesus isn’t just telling a story about treasure. He’s asking us what do we actually believe is worth everything?
Not what we say.
Not what we hope.
But what our life reveals.
Let’s face it, each of us is in essence buying something with our lives. The Kingdom of Heaven doesn’t compete with those other things.
It exposes them.
Facing What’s Real
These parables are exactly the kind of truth that transforms lives. The men’s treasure doesn’t change nor does the pearl increase in value. What changes is their ability to see clearly.
And once they see clearly they cannot go back to living as if what they had before was enough.
The same is true for us.
No one encounters Jesus and goes back to living how they were before.
Reflection Questions
- What have you “stumbled upon” in your life that felt undeniably real?
- Where are you still searching?
- What are you holding onto that feels too costly to release?
- If you’re honest, what is your life currently saying is “worth everything”?
A Closing Thought
Some truths we can admire from a distance, but the kingdom of heaven isn’t one of them. It must be received.
And to receive it fully we will have to let something else go.
The question is not whether it costs but, whether we see clearly enough to recognize it’s worth.

Until my next post…
Be salty, stay lit.
