More Than a Good Speaker

When I hear the phrase gifted communicator, I typically think of someone who is charismatic, eloquent, or captivating from a stage, like Ronald Reagan or Martin Luther King, Jr.

But, over the years, I’ve learned gifted communication is about way more than speaking well.

A gifted communicator helps people see more clearly, think more deeply, and live more faithfully. Gifted communicators don’t simply transfer information, they cultivate understanding. They don’t just fill minds. They reach hearts.

The best communicators are often the best listeners. They’ve learned to ask thoughtful questions before offering quick answers. They work hard to seek to understand before they seek to be understood.

Jesus modeled this perfectly.

He told stories that lingered in people’s hearts. He asked questions that exposed motives. He spoke with compassion to the broken, conviction to the proud, and hope to the weary. Sometimes He taught crowds. Sometimes He spoke to one person beside a well. And sometimes His silence spoke louder than words.

At its best, communication is an act of service.

Our words have the power to encourage or discourage, clarify or confuse, heal or wound. That’s why Scripture reminds us:

“Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.” (Ephesians‬ ‭4‬:‭29‬, ESV‬‬)

Perhaps the goal isn’t to become a more impressive communicator but to be a more faithful one.

May our words reflect truth without arrogance, grace without compromise, and hope without pretense. And may those who hear us leave with a clearer picture, not of us, but of Christ.

Are my words drawing attention to myself, or are they pointing people toward Jesus?
